    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé L'aptitude des femelles parasitoides (Chelonus insularis Cresson,Telenomus heliothidis Ashmead, etTrichogramma pretiosum Riley) à discerner les œufs de «vers du bourgeon» du tabac,Heliothis virescens (F.), qui sont parasités de ceux qui ne le sont pas, a été analysée par des études de laboratoire. Les 3 espèces ont été relativement efficaces en distinguant les œufs qui avaient été parasités auparavant par des femelles conspécifiques.Telenomus heliothidis etTrichogramma pretiosum pouvaient les discerner par examen externe tandis queC. insularis semblait pouvoir discerner les hôtes parasités par examen externe ou interne. Dans des essais interspécifiques, chacune des espèces a distingué faiblement les œufs parasités par les 2 autres espèces.
    Notes: Abstract The ability of female parasitoids (Chelonus insularis Cresson,Telenomus heliothidis Ashmead, andTrichogramma pretiosum Riley) to distinguish between parasitized and unparasitized tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens (F.), eggs was determined in laboratory studies. All 3 species were relatively efficient at detecting eggs that were previously parasitized by conspecific females.T. heliothidis andT. pretiosum were able to discriminate on the basis of external examination of host eggs, whereasC. insularis appeared to examine hosts internally as well as externally. In interspecific tests, no species readily rejected eggs parasitized by the other 2 species.

    Notes: Abstract An analysis of the compartmentation and fluxes of inorganic phosphate in isolated cladophyll cells from Asparagus officinalis was made in parallel with an ultrastructural study. The elution pattern of labelled inorganic phosphate (which indicates that the asparagus cells are behaving as a system of three compartments in series) was used to quantify the fluxes between the vacuole, cytoplasm and free space. A relaxation time of 198 min was calculated for inorganic phosphate exchange between the vacuole and cytoplasm. It is, therefore, suggested that the vacuole serves to buffer the cytoplasmic inorganic phosphate concentration in the long term. However, in the short term, exchange with the vacuole will not appreciably affect the cytoplasmic inorganic phosphate concentration and thus the partitioning of photosynthetically fixed carbon.

    Notes: Summary Studies were conducted during the 1979 growing season to examine how North American bison (Bison bison) use prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies in Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota. Objectives included (1) determining whether bison selected for prairie dog towns parkwide; (2) characterizing in greater detail bison use patterns of a 36-ha colony in Pringle Valley as a function of time since prairie dog colonization; and (3) relating these bison use patterns to measured changes in structure and nutritional value of vegetation on and off the dog town. During midsummer, prairie dog towns were one of the most frequently used habitats by bison parkwide. Day-long observations at Pringle Valley revealed that bison exerted strong selection (nearly 90% of all habitat use and feeding time) for the dog town, which occupied only 39% of the valley. While there, they partitioned their use of the colony by grazing in moderately affected areas (occupied 〈8 years by prairie dogs) and by resting in the oldest area (〉26 years occupation). Prairie dogs facilitate bison habitat selection for a shortgrass successional stage in this mixed-grass community by causing a broad array of compositional, structural, and nutritional changes in the vegetation.

    Notes: Summary Research was conducted to determine the effects of a native, sedentary rodent of North American grasslands, the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus), on seasonal aboveground plant biomass and nutrient dynamics and plant species diversity. The study was done on a northern mixed-grass prairie site at wind Cave National Park, South Dakota. Peak live plant biomass was greatest (190 g/m2) on the uncolonized part of the study area and least (95 g/m2) on a part of the prairie dog town colonized for 3 to 8 y. Peak live plant biomass (170 g/m2) of the oldest portion of the prairie dog town (colonized 〉26 y) was not significantly different from that of uncolonized prairie. However, where-as graminoids composed 〉85% of the total biomass of the latter area, forbs and dwarf shrubs (Artemisia frigida) were 〉95% of the total of the former. Both standing-dead plant biomass and litter declined markedly as time since colonization increased. Total plant species diversity (H) was greatest in the young prairie dog town (colonized for 3 to 8 y). Nitrogen concentration of plant shoots varied significantly as a function of time since colonization. Shoot-nitrogen was lowest in plants from the uncolonized site and greatest in plants collected from the longest-colonized areas of the prairie dog town. Shoot-nitrogen declined significantly over the growing season and tended to be higher in C3 graminoids than in C4 graminoids. In vitro digestible dry matter showed similar trends; the differences between C3 and C4 digestibilities were greatest during the last half of the growing season. We suggest that prairie dog-induced changes in plant biomass, plant species diversity, plant nutrient content, and forage digestibility may lead to further alterations of nutrient cycling and trophic dynamics in this mixed-grass prairie ecosystem.

    Notes: Abstract During development of the first leaf of breadwheat (Triticum aestivum L.) the number of chloroplasts per mesophyll cell increases between three- and four-fold. To establish if chloroplast replication is accompanied by endoreduplication, the nuclear DNA content of the cells was determined by chemical assay of isolated nuclei from mesophyll protoplasts and by microdensitometry of nuclei in mesophyll tissue. The DNA content of the nuclei was constant (27 to 32 pg) at each phase of chloroplast replication. Approximately 93% of the cells had a nuclear DNA content close to the 2C value of 32 pg. It is concluded that chloroplast replication is not dependent on nuclear endoreduplication in seedling leaves of wheat.

    Notes: Abstract The top and bottom of two sediment cores collected from an urban receiving basin in NW London, and stormwater samples from the attendant catchment, have been analysed for their hydrocarbon content. In surface sediments, basal sediments and stormwater, total aliphatic hydrocarbon levels are 445–690 µg g−1 dry wt., 43–224 µg g−1 and 0.36–1.10 mg l−1, respectively; and total levels of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are 780–1 100 µg g−1, 310–640 µg g1 and 5.83–18.21 mg l−1, respectively. Biodegradation of aliphatics is assessed by phytane:n-C18 and pristane: n-C17 ratios. Hydrocarbon sources are determined from phytane: pristane ratios, odd: even carbon chain length ratios, the presence of an unresolved complex mixture, and by comparison of the amount of methyl-substituted PAH s with that of the parent compounds. Comparison of total levels between surface and basal sediments shows a 1 to 3 fold increase in total PAHs and a 3 to 10 fold increase in aliphatic hydrocarbons over a 120 year period.
