Notes: Summary The blood supply of 50 facial nerves was examined during a micro-anatomical study of the ponto-cerebellar angle using injections of colored latex or Chinese ink. The results indicate the presence of a double arterial blood supply: the proximal supply, rising at the level of the brain stem, results from the confluence of three to five arterioles originating from the anterior inferior cerebellar artery or from the basilar artery itself; the distal supply at the level of the internal acoustic meatus arises from the labyrinthine artery. These two arterial systems do not anastomose directly but by way of capillaries of less than 200 microns in diameter. From these findings the authors conclude that certain postoperative facial paralyses, which may arise in spite of the conservation of the nerve, are in fact ischemic in nature.

Notes: Summary This may be the first report of intrauterine purulent leptomeningitis, the infection of which has been caused by amnio-chorionitis via the umbilical route. The fetus was stillborn at the 35th week of gestation. Neuropathologic features did not differ from those of neonatal meningitis.

Notes: Summary An early fetal case of cloverleaf skull anomaly associated with thanatophoric chondrodystrophy is described. Localized ventricular diverticles are a peculiar finding. In addition there are previously described malformations limited to the temporal lobes and comprising plump gyri with abnormal deep sulci, thick periventricular heterotopias, dysgenesis of the parahippocampal gyrus, agenesis of the Ammon's horn, and small micropolygyria. The skull deformity is not dependent on hydrocephalus, demonstrating inconsistencies in previous pathogenetic concepts.

Notes: The suitability of VLF ground surveys in the investigation of shallow two-dimensional structures is analyzed. For such structures the polar formalism is derived, necessary in practice since the transmitters are generally not in the structural strike or profile. A simple vertical dike is considered to demonstrate the striking anisotropy which can be expected over such a structure, in particular the high apparent resistivity along the direction of a well-conducting dike and the low resistivity across it. The theory is then confronted with the practical example of an asymmetrical vertical dike resulting from a strike-slip fault. Modelling of the survey results is very successful and yields good confirmation of the polar behaviour. VLF ground surveys thus provide a quick and powerful tool for the study of geological accidents within about 100 m of the surface.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In the course of a one-year-period, the number of negative and positive small ions contained by the outside air was continuously recorded by means of a ion counter (manufacturer: Periso, type pN-01. Characteristic developments in the weather situation in the Greater Graz area showed specific changes in the equilibrium of negative and positive small ions. However, the differences in ion densities remained within a range of only 10–15%. Also in the case of meteorological conditions which corresponded to foehn weather, there were not the significant changes in the ionization of the air described in several studies.

Notes: Summary The antihistaminic drug methapyrilene hydrochloride, which induces liver tumors in rats, was administrated orally to female Wistar rats. The animals were killed after 21, 38, 77, 119, 181, and 196 days. The activities of adenosine-5-triphosphatase (ATPase) and γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (γ-GT) in the liver were investigated histochemically. At 21 days, a homogeneous decrease of ATPase activity as well as a slight increase of γ-GT activity was found in the periportal zone. Additionally, after 38 days hepatocellular foci with reappearance of γ-GT occurred mainly in the periportal zone. After 119 days, foci with increased γ-GT activity as well as a significant reduction of ATPase activity could be observed predominantly in the periportal region. The size and number of these putative preneoplastic foci were increased according to the time of administration of methapyrilene hydrochloride. After 181 days of methapyrilene hydrochloride treatment three of five animals developed hyperplastic nodules with corresponding alterations of enzyme activities. Methapyrilene hydrochloride — a carcinogen with an unknown mechanism of reaction-produces preneoplastic changes that are analogous to the well known preneoplastic lesions in the liver observed after administration of other carcinogenic agents.
