Notes: Summary The fatty acid composition of a new strain of the yeastRhodotorula glutinis, grown in molasses, has been studied and found to contain palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, and small amounts of other constituents. In addition, 3-methoxy octadecanoic acid has been shown to be present in the glycolipid fraction.

Notes: Summary. Maternal serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) was measured during the second trimester in 219 twin pregnancies uncomplicated by neural-tube defects (NTD) and in 11 twin pregnancies discordant for NTD. Serum AFP levels were recorded in multiples of the median value (MOM) calculated from normal singleton pregnancies. Of the twin pregnancies uncomplicated by NTD 49% had AFP levels 〈2·5 MOM, 7·8% had levels 〉5 MOM and 59% of these were associated with either abortion, stillbirth or fetus papyraceous. In twin pregnancies with serum AFP levels 〈5 MOM an unsuccessful outcome was noted in only 4% (χ2, P〈0·05). There was a significant negative correlation between serum AFP levels and combined birthweights (r=0·954). All 11 pregnancies discordant for NTD had serum AFP values 〉5 MOM and this level appears to be a suitable cut-off point above which there should be further diagnostic investigations and monitoring of fetal well-being.

Notes: Following ion-exchange, Sephadex LH-20 and paper chromatography of the methanolic extracts of young, developing fruits of Aegle marmelos Correa, cytokinin-like activity in the soybean callus assay was detected in six fractions. Of the four butanol-soluble compounds, two were tentatively identified as zeatin and zeatin riboside, and the others as zeatin glucoside and zeatin riboside glucoside. The major cytokinino of the butanol-insoluble fraction is probably zeatin nucleotide. The levels of compounds with cytokinin-like activity were high during the early phase, and low in the subsequent period of fruit growth. The activity resembling that of cytokinin glucoside increased with maturation of the fruit. The content of free cytokinins in the fruits was more than that released from the tRNA.

Notes: Abstract The rheological study of coal-oil suspensions is very important because of their application in many industries as alternative fuels to petroleum oil. In this work, the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspension was studied for a range of coal volume fractions from 0.0378 to 0.427. Shear stresses were measured for shear rates up to 200 s−1 using a Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. All the suspensions behaved like non-Newtonian liquids and exhibited significant increases in apparent viscosity on storage. The flow behaviour of both freshly prepared and aged suspensions was able to be described by power-law models. A model similar to that given by Chong was used to establish relation between the relative apparent viscosity and coal volume fraction for freshly prepared as well as all aged suspensions. A correlation was also established between ageing time and maximum coal volume fraction.

Notes: Summary Patients admitted to the inpatient ward of a psychiatric unit in a general hospital have been studied with regard to their clinical characteristics, reasons for admission and discharge patterns. The results indicate that patients are most often admitted for the management of acute disturbance and detailed diagnostic evaluation and they are discharged in a semi-improved state. Implications of such a service pattern are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Scattering of positrons by hydrogen-like-ions (He+, Li2+, Be3+ and B4+) has been studied using two variants of the polarized orbital method. The positronium formation channel has not been included in the calculations,s-wave phase shifts obtained using the two variants differ appreciably from each other. Moreover, the polarized orbitals-wave phase shifts fore +-B4+ scattering differ from the corresponding variational results qualitatively in the low energy region. The differential cross sections are reported.

Notes: Abstract The hydrostatic equilibrium of the gas field system is studied in the halo. Cosmic-ray distribution is considered independently from the magnetic field on the basis of the diffusion model of the propagation of cosmic rays. We show that the cosmic rays extend in the halo to distances of a few kiloparsecs. The magnetic field decreases slowly with height above the galactic plane.

Notes: Abstract The total ionization cross section in electron-hydrogen scattering in the energy range 20.4–68.0 eV has been calculated by a method in which the initial state of the system is treated by a distorted wave polarized orbital method and the final state is described by (1) a product of two unscreened Coulomb functions and (2) a product of a plane wave and a Coulomb function. The corresponding two sets of results using a plane wave in the incident channel have also been reported. The present results where both the electrons are represented by Coulomb waves are in closer agreement than other theoretical predictions With measured values.
