Notes: Abstract We have studied the incidence of enterotoxigenic and enteropathogenicEscherichia coli strains associated with infant diarrhoeal disease in Galicia (North-west Spain). During a period of 9 months we isolated heat-labile enterotoxin-positive strains in 2.1% of children with diarrhoea examined, whereas the production of heat-stable enterotoxin was detected in 1.1% of them. Enteropathogenic strains were isolated from 5.3% of the children with diarrhoea, but none of these strains released heat-labile or heat-stable enterotoxins.

Notes: Abstract Eighteen patients ranging in age from 32–82 years with benign distal esophageal stricture underwent and survived fundic patch operation. Twelve of these patients had undergone esophageal dilatation but without success. Five had had surgery for hiatal hernia using Hill, Belsey or Lortat-Jacob techniques. Middle laparotomy was done in five and left thoracotomy in thirteen. A fundic patch with a 270° fundoplication was performed in seven an a fundic patch with 360° fundoplication in the remaining eleven. The average hospital stay was 12.3 days. Dysphagia disappeared in seventeen and persisted for eight months in one patient. Three patients required instrumental dilatation for a few months. Endoscopic examination, pH study and X-ray fluoroscopy were done. Gastroesphageal reflux was nil in patients treated with Nissen's 360° fundoplication and three of these 7 patients without Nissen's fundoplication had gastroesophageal reflux. Epithelization of the patched esophageal wound was evident 6 months after the operation.

Notes: Abstract With the object of designing a feasible and more radical surgical intervention for the treatment of carcinoma of the gastric cardia and improving the long term survival of these patients, a procedure was described which entails total esophagogastrectomy and resection of the distal pancreas, spleen and regional lymphnodes. The esophagus was mobilizedvia the diaphragmatic hiatus without thoracotomy. Intestinal continuity, installed isoperistaltically was restituted in the same operation using a segment of transverse and descending colon transferred to the left lateral cervial aspect by way of the posterior mediastinum. The procedure was used in four patients and mortality and serious complications were nil.

Notes: Abstract A patient with splenic artery aneurysm which developed after creation of selective distal spleno-renal shunt for hepatic cirrhosis and portal hypertension was presented. Three months after operation, an aneurysm of the splenic artery with a diameter of about 20 mm was detected. This aneurysm reached 4 cm three months later, and a resection was carried out. An arterial continuity was established by means of end-to-end anastomosis of the sectioned arterial ends. Because the flow through the splenic artery was about 60% of the total flow of the selective distal spleno-renal shunt, it is important to maintain continuity in order to avoid thrombosis of the shunt.

Notes: Abstract A correlation between specific adsorption and corrosion inhibition was made on the basis of calculations of the degree of coverage at zero charge on the electrode and corrosion rates. 1-butylpyridinium bromide (BPB) was choosen as a model compound for these studies. The electrical double-layer parameters were determined at constant charge on a mercury electrode, from values of the interfacial capacity and surface tension obtained experimentally from aqueous solutions of BPB at 25° C. The characteristics of the salt as a corrosion inhibitor were studied through Tafel plots and weight-loss measurements using mild steel plates immersed in H2SO4 solutions. Analysis of the results lead to the conclusion that the salt adsorbs intensely on the metal surface, forming a complete monolayer of BP+ ions in 0.1 mol dm−3 solutions and multilayers for higher concentrations. The results of this work indicate that for high coverages there is a good correlation between the amount of BP+ specifically adsorbed on mercury and the inhibition of the corrosion process on mild steel. That type of compound acts mainly as an anodic inhibitor in acid media by the formation of protective layers on the metal surface.

Notes: A simple transition probability formula is applied to the core hole ionization in CO, satisfactorily predicting the ratio between the intensity of the two inner-shell peaks. The formula is also applied to the full ESCA spectra of water and methane; the theoretical results agree reasonably well with the experiment.

Notes: The study of the structure of the electrode-solution interface usually involves the measurement of the differential capacity-potential characteristics of the system. In order to obtain the double-layer parameters from these data, integration and differentiation procedures are required and, for this purpose, the use of computational methods is of great value. Two computer programs have been written for the treatment of data for the adsorption of neutral molecules on electrodes. The programs use the charge density and the electrode potential as the electrical variable, respectively, and, in both cases, the differentiation procedures have been optimized by the use of an adequate numerical function. The advantages of doing a simultaneous analysis on both electrical variables are pointed out.
