Notes: Abstract The properties of quantum statistically degenerate systems of Bosons which are created by an external pump field and decay within a finite lifetime are investigated by means of a Green's function treatment. These investigations help to understand the physical properties of such condensed Bose-systems as excitons, excitonic molecules and spin aligned hydrogen atoms. As an example, recent experiments by Hulin et al. on degenerate excitons in Cu2O are analyzed and a condensate fraction of about 5% is obtained.

Notes: Abstract The time-dependent solutions of the mean-field Maxwell-Bloch equations for optical bistability are studied numerically for the deterministic equations and the stochastic equations with additional noise sources. From the solutions of the deterministic equations, a discrete map is constructed showing that the periodic and chaotic solutions form a Feigenbaum scenarium. Inclusion of noise sources leads to a finite lifetime of the states in the upper bistable branch and to destabilization of higher periodic solutions.

Notes: Abstract The optical dielectric function of an electron-hole plasma in highly excited polar semiconductors with a direct band gap is calculated by solving a Bethe-Salpeter equation for the polarization function. The screening of the Coulomb potential is treated in a damped phonon-plasmon-pole approximation. We include the complex dynamical self-energy corrections as well as electron-hole correlations.

Notes: Abstract We investigate in the framework of the dielectric formalism the anomalies which have been observed in high intensity excitonic polariton-polariton scattering experiments. The anomalies are due to the virtual formation of biexcitons. Our results are in quantitative agreement with the experimental observations of Itoh et al. for CuCl.

Notes: Abstract The gain spectra of the electron-hole plasma recombination in CdS are investigated as a function of the excitation conditions and of the lattice temperature. From a lineshape analysis which includes such many-body effects as collision broadening, single-particle energy renormalization and excitonic enhancement, average plasma parameters are obtained. In contrast to the predictions of quasi-equilibrium theory, one finds that the electron-hole plasma does not reach a full thermal quasi-equilibrium in direct-gap materials because of the short lifetimes of the carriers. The nonequilibrium effects are shown to lead to the formation of electron-hole plasma density fluctuations. No well-defined coexistence region exists. The experimental results in the phase transition region can consistently be explained by theoretical treatments of this nonequilibrium phase transition.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Hemmung der Atmungsaktivität von Belebtschlamm wird mit Hilfe biochemischer Verfahren ermittelt.
Notes: Summary The inhibition of the respiratory activity is determined by means of biochemical procedures. Various respiration measurement procedures are known for this purpose. All of these procedures are based on the measurement of the oxygen consumption during the measurement period. The determined time is an index for the respiratory activity of the micro-organisms in the examined medium. One can, however, also determine the respiratory activity by measuring the increase of the end product of the metabolism processes, i.e., by measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide in the examined medium. A procedure is proposed, which, by the utilization of gas-sensitive electrodes, enables the measurement of the carbon dioxide concentration and thereby the determination of the respiratory activity.
