Notes: The endocellular distribution of calcium has been determined and Ca-ATPase activity measured in subcellular fractions of various species: horse-bean (Vicia faba L., var. minor), barley (Hordeum vulgare L., var. Astrix), wheat (Triticum vulgare L., var. Hardy), lupine (Lupinus luteus L., var. Weiko III), oat (Avena sativa L. var. Zelma) which grow differently on calcareous media. The vacuolar calcium concentrations are below thermodynamic equilibrium with the medium for all plants. The deficit in vacuolar calcium is accentuated in plants which prefer calcareous soils. Membranes of such plants show weak affinity for calcium and also considerable Ca-ATPase activity. It is suggested that low vacuolar concentration is a consequence of low cytoplasmic concentration. The role of Ca-ATPases and the physicochemical properties of membranes in counteracting high external calcium is discussed.

Notes: Membrane resistances, electrical potentials and intracellular K+ activity have been studied in protoplasts of Acer pseudoplatanus L. using microelectrodes. The plasmalemma appears to be damaged during protoplast processing, so that it is almost completely depolarized. The positive polarization of the protoplasts is a property of their tonoplast. The osmotic shock of general dilution of the medium brings about a slight positive polarization of the protoplasts, which probably is the consequence of a dilution of the ionic contents of the cell. A rapid dilution of extracellular potassium produces the same effect by a considerable efflux of K+, which changes the concentration gradient so that electropositivity is accentuated. In general, certain states of shock can cause such polarization. These results, particularly the development of internal potassium activity, help in understanding the initial cause of the positive polarization that is sometimes observed in protoplasts.

Notes: Abstract Radiologically visible calcification in the wall of a uriniferous perirenal pseudocyst is rare. This unusual finding was seen in a newborn infant who was found to have a left flank mass on the first day of life. When perirenal pseudocysts occur in infants, they are usually caused by congenital obstructive lesions of the urinary tract.

Notes: Abstract A 4 year old child was seen because of an enlarging epigastric mass and a rapidly falling hematocrit 31/2 years following steroid treatment for multiple hepatic hemangioendotheliomas. Technetium 99 m sulfur colloid liver scan and hepatic angiography confirmed the presence of a large, vascular mass involving the left lobe of the liver. A left hepatic lobectomy was performed and histopathology showed angiosarcoma. As children with hemangioendotheliomas of the liver begin to survive for longer periods of time, surveillance for the possible development of neoplastic disease is recommended.
