    Notes: Abstract The concept of natural selection is examined, which is one of basic principles for the Darwinian interpretation of evolution. In this model selection is defined as a solution of the deterministic Eigen equation. Next, the random effect is introduced through the mutation term. However, the probability of finding the solution expressing the selection is shown to be smallest. The validity of the model and its applicability to polynucleotide replication are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A method is proposed to determine the rigid structure as well as the three dimensional motion of an object from a sequence of orthographically projected images. It is assumed that the velocities as well as the positions of the points attached to the object are observable in the images. The “instantaneous rigidity condition” wich states that the relative position vector between any two points is orthogonal to the corresponding relative velocity vector is derived from the condition of rigidity. Assuming further that the rotational velocity component is constant throughout the period of observation, each of the projected relative velocity vectors is shown to move along one of the elliptical trajectories, all of which are similar to one another. The orientations of the longer axes are common to every trajectory. Then one can determine the equations of the ellipses by observing only two points in three views or three points in two views. The solution is obtained from a set of linear equations. The length of the longer axis enables one to determine the relative velocity. The instantaneous rigidity condition is then used to obtain the relative position. The special cases where the rotational axis is either perpendicular to or parallel with the image plane are discussed. The above results are discussed in relation to the relevant psychophysical observations as well as theoretical studies.

    Notes: 13C-NMR spectra of ring carbons and O-acetyl carbonyl carbons of cellulose acetate (CA) in dimethyl sulfoxide-d6 were analyzed. The CA samples with the degree of substitution (DS) ranging from 0.84 and 1.91 were prepared by homogeneous acetylation of cellulose with acetic anhydride in a 10% LiCl/dimethyl acetamide solvent. It was found that the use of these low DS samples permitted easier assignments not only of the ring carbon but also of the O-acetyl carbonyl carbon signals. The assignments were confirmed by comparing with the 1H-NMR spectra of the samples obtained by complete acetylation of the corresponding CA samples with acetyl-d3 chloride. Two methods for determining the distribution of O-acetyl groups of CA, i.e., the relative DS at the three different types of hydroxyl groups, were developed. One is based on the measurements of the relative intensities of the signals for the ring carbons and the other is based on the measurements of the relative intensities of the signals for the O-acetyl carbonyl carbons.
