Notes: Summary When peripheral blood is serially diluted with saline solution, the bloody colour is determined by the derivative of haemoglobin. Solutions over 105/mm3 red cells or 0.5 g/dl haemoglobin are represented as being sanguineous. This is the lower limit for a subdural haematoma, because the name itself requires at least a bloody appearance of its contents. Diluted blood solutions less 0.5×104 red cells or 15 mg/dl haemoglobin are macroscopically translucent or watery clear. Solutions between bloody and translucent are xanthochromic. If the contents of a subdural collection is watery clear or xanthochromic, it must be called an effusion or hygroma. The haemoglobin in haematomas is the most important factor determining the attenuation values in the CT scan. Protein, iron or calcium ions have only minimal concentration in haematomas and are neglegible for attenuation values of haematomas in the CT scan. The lightest sanguineous solution, that is a haematoma, corresponds to 15 Hounsfield's units measured by the CT scan.

Notes: A total of 171 gastric carcinomas comprising 69 advanced cancers and 102 early cancers were examined immunohistochemically for lysozyme. Tumour cells containing lysozyme were detected in 65 cases or 38% of the 171 gastric cancer cases. The incidence of these cells did not differ remarkably by histological type and infiltrative growth of gastric carcinoma. Of the foregoing 65 cases, two well-differentiated adenocarcinomas and three signet ring cell carcinomas had numerous lysozyme-containing tumour cells, 13 had many argentaffin or argyrophil cells, and 40 had various amounts of several types of mucin. In addition, tumour cells containing both lysozyme and mucin could be identified. No correlation could be observed between lysozyme immunoreactivity in the tumour cells and cellular infiltration of granulocytes or macrophages around the tumour. The lysozyme appeared to be produced by tumour cells. The two year survival rates indicate a tendency for advanced gastric cancers containing lysozyme to have a poor prognosis.

Notes: Summary Arachidonic acid uptake activity was measured in platelets obtained from 27 Type 2 diabetic patients and 18 agematched control subjects. In both groups after l h incubation almost all the incorporated 14C-arachidonic acid was located in the phospholipids of the platelets. Arachidonic acid was predominantly incorporated into phosphatidylcholine. The radioactivity incorporated into platelets increased linearly with incubation time, up to 90 min. The linear increase was observed at arachidonic acid concentrations of 0.1–1.0 μg/ml in both groups. The rate of incorporation of radioactivity in diabetic platelets was about 1.4 times higher than that in control platelets at all arachidonic acid concentrations studied. The arachidonic acid uptake activity of diabetic platelets (577±26 ng/60 min per 109platelets) was significantly higher than that in control platelets (410±26 ng/60 min per 109platelets). No significant correlations were found between the arachidonic acid uptake activity and fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol or triglyceride levels. The arachidonic acid uptake activity of platelets was significantly higher in diabetic patients with proliferative retinopathy than in those with little or no background retinopathy. In addition, there were no significant differences between control and diabetic subjects in the uptake activity of platelets for linoleic acid and oleic acid. These data may explain the elevated arachidonic acid content in diabetic platelet phospholipids and enhancement of thromboxane synthesis in diabetes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch orale Applikation von MNNG (N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidin) wurden Carcinoide im Drüsenmagen von Ratten erzeugt.
Notes: Summary A total of 30 inbred Wistar rats were orally administered 70 μg/ml solution of N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) for 35 weeks and then tap water for the following 20 to 30 weeks. Four of the 20 females and two of ten males developed carcinoids in the glandular stomach, but no metastasis could be found. Carcinoids developed most frequently in the fundic portion along the greater curvature. Histologically, these tumors were medullary anaplastic carcinomas containing two different endocrine cell populations. The first cell type was argentaffin having electron-dense, somewhat pleomorphic secretory granules (437–810 nm) and the second type was argyrophil having round granules with a dense core and a pale halo (550 nm). None of these tumors showed endocrine immunoactivity for gastrin, somatostatin, insulin, glucagon, and enkephalin. One of these gastric tumors developed into scirrhous carcinoma, but differentiated adenocarcinoma could not be seen in the glandular stomach.

Notes: Summary Eighteen argyrophil cell carcinomas in 101 early gastric carcinomas were examined histologically, ultrastructurally, and immunohistochemically for polypeptides, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), lysozyme, and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). Seven of these 18 tumors had gastrin, and two of seven tumors also contained somatostatin. In all of these 18 tumors CEA were demonstrated. Seven had lysozyme and five of seven tumors also contained gastrin; hCG were present in four of 18 tumors and two of four tumors had gastrin, CEA, mucin, and lysozyme simultaneously. Argentaffin cells were found in seven of 18 tumors. Of the above seven tumors containing gastrin, three had argentaffin cells. Ultrastructurally, several types of secretory granules were noted and tumor cells resembling D1-or P cells were present in nine of the 18 tumors. Macroscopically, many of the tumors showed IIc or IIc+III type. Histologically, the 18 tumors consisted of six well differentiated adenocarcinomas and 12 poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas including signet-ring cell carcinoma. These 12 tumors frequently developed in the stomach of young females. In view of our previous investigations, it was suggested that the IIc-type argyrophil cell carcinoma histologically showing poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma may be related to scirrhous carcinoma of the stomach.

Notes: Abstract A fast response frequency-modulated interferometric polarimeter was designed and constructed with a single 28 μm H2O laser for high density plasma diagnostics. This newly developed modulation system employs an electro-magnetically driven movable mirror to achieve the modulation frequency beyound 1 MHz for about 100 μs duration. The movable mirror performance is studied experimentally in detail. The determination of the Faraday rotation angle is based on the zero-crossing method for the observed beat signals produced by two kinds of rotating plane-polarized waves. The feasibility of the polarimeter constructed was verified in experiments of a field-reversed thetapinch plasma.

Notes: Abstract A high-power CW 27.972 μm water vapor laser has been constructed in order to use as a light source of an interferometer for plasma diagnostics. The laser consists of 220 cm length and 2.0 cm small bore Pyrex glass discharge tube, semi-confocal resonator and Michelson coupler. From the measurement of cavity detuning curves, it is found that two waveguide modes, EH11 and EH21 oscillate. The increase of the output power is found to become more than seven times larger by adding He(50%)−H2(50%) mixed gas. Under the optimum condition, the maximum output power of 65 mW or the output power per unit cavity volume of 83 μW/cm3 is obtained.

Notes: Abstract We show, by using the Liapunov method, that the Lorenz model perturbed by Gaussian white noise is ergodic for any Rayleigh number. Our theory confirms two properties which have been found by numerical calculation. We also discuss the ergodicity of some other randomly perturbed dissipative systems, a one-dimensional laser, and a homopolar disk dynamo model of the geomagnetism.
