Notes: Eight intermetallic compounds described so far by clusters are compared. It is shown that a common framework exists for all these crystal structures. The voids within this common part are filled in different ways. Moreover, for each of these crystal structures all atoms together form a three-dimensional connected framework. Therefore, the framework description seems to be more adequate than the cluster description.

Notes: A hierarchy of classifications for subgroups of space groups by means of Euclidean and affine normalizers is introduced. The different levels of this classification scheme are illustrated in detail with examples and its usefulness for various problems is demonstrated. The Euclidean (or affine) normalizers of a space group G and of one of its subgroups U may either coincide [N(G)=N(U)], or form a group-subgroup pair [N(G) ⊃ N(U) or N(G) ⊂ N(U)], or share only a common subgroup [N(G) ⫆N(U) and N(G) ¢ N(U)]. The different implications of these cases on the equivalence classes of subgroups (or supergroups) are discussed. A procedure is given to calculate the normalizers. The same concept may be applied to number of equivalent subgroups or supergroups, other crystallographic groups without problems.

Notes: The Euclidean normalizers of space groups form the appropriate mathematical tool for several problems treated independently by crystallographers in the past, e.g. the comparison, the classification and the standardized description of crystal structures. Explicit tables are presented that enable the user to handle Euclidean normalizers in an easy way and, especially, to calculate all descriptions of a crystal structure compatible with a chosen space-group setting. The use of the tables is illustrated by different examples, and the role of Euclidean normalizers for crystal-structure determination is discussed.

Notes: Cooking and chemical properties were investigated on beef patties formulated from UDSA Choice or Cutter-Canner cow beef; processed by either grinding, flaking, or flaking, then grinding; and subjected to final broiling from the precooked or raw state. Quality grade of lean exerted minimal influence on the cooking and chemical properties. Precooked patties had more total cooking losses than nonprecooked patties. For precooked patties made from flaked beef, most of the losses in weight; and configuration occurred during precooking rather than final broiling. The opposite was true for precooked patties made from gro and beef. Thus, in order to maximize yield and minimize configurational changes the method of patty processing should be considered in deciding whether to precook patties prior to freezing.

Abstract: Summary Swiss legislation demands form the employer measures for the protection of the health of the employee but does not oblige them to install occupational health services. Employer and employee can both profit from the presence of occupational physicians who can assume tasks in councelling, surveying, investigating, training, treating and mediating between the employee and his superior as well as between the company and practising physicians. An independent position is a prerequisit and also in the interest of the employer. Employers, universities and trade unions should work together in promoting close cooperation between physicians and safety engineers, in fighting occupational disease, in studying psychic adverse effects of occupational factors and in improving occupational health also in the tertiary (service) sector.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear spin polarized alkali atom beams are used to investigate metal surfaces. The surface diffusion of the alkali atoms on the surface results in a randomly fluctuating electric field gradient. The relaxation is measured in dependence of the surface temperature. Using an additional external RF field, also NMR measurement can be performed. Besides some fluctuating components of the EFG which cause the relaxation process, there is also a static part of the EFG. This results in an energy splitting of the nuclear spin states and can be detected by the NMR experiments.

Notes: The direct determination of the enantiomeric purity of halocarboxylic acids is described. The method used involves gas chromatographic separation of the corresponding tert-butylamides on deactivated glass or fused-silica capillaries coated with Chirasil-Val. Both the influence of the amide moiety on enantiomeric resolution and tailing, and the racemization during formation of the amide derivatives were studied.
