Summary X-ray K-absorption spectra of copper in copper(II) chelates involving DL α-aminobutyric acid, hippuric acid and edta have been investigated with particular reference to the number, length and strength of the metal-ligand bonds. The difference in coordination numbers found from XAES and other investigations has been explained on the basis of metal-to-ligand πback donation. Information on bond strength trends obtained from XAES data is supported by i.r. spectral parameters. EXAFS energy separations are used to determine, by Levy's method, the individual metal-donor as well as metal-metal bond lengths which agree with available x-ray diffraction data.
