Notizen: The Carlin-Larsson population model of Baltic salmon was used to simulate reduced effort in an offshore fishery for feeding salmon and its effect on home water fisheries. Some simplifying assumptions had to be made; no changes in seasonal mean weight or exploitation rate in the home water fisheries were assumed. With a simulated termination of the offshore fishery, seasonal mean weights from the time before the excessive offshore fishery started were also applied to give a maximum effect on the catches. The total non-catch fishing mortality in the offshore fishery was estimated at 5% per season (total M = 10% per season).A total ban on the offshore fishery would mean a sixfold increase in catch-value for home water fisheries and a total value twice that in the present situation with the present seasonal mean weights. With the higher mean weights the simulated catch would be 87% and its value 182% higher than at present.

Notizen: Abstract Improved production yields of short-lived halogens were obtained from a ThO2 target, irradiated with 600 MeV protons, in combination with a negative surface ionization source. Mass-separated samples were studied by decay spectroscopy. Production yields of radioactive isotopes of chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine are presented. Half-lives and relative neutron emission probabilities were measured for the heavy bromine isotopes89−92Br. Normalizing to earlier publishedP n values for89Br, the results are:89Br (4.30±0.14s,P n =13.6±0.8%),90Br (1.92±0.06s,P n =24.8±1.5%),91Br (0.53 ±0.03 s,P n =30.1 ±2.1%), and92Br (0.31 ±0.02 s,P n =34.6±2.5%). Energy spectra ofβ-delayed neutrons were measured.

Notizen: Summary Cut splanchnic nerves were stimulated electrically at the preganglionic level in efferent direction in anesthetized cats with the adrenals ligated bilaterally. A significant decrease of the intracellular serotonin (5-HT) levels in populations (n=20) of individual enterochromaffin cells (EC) in the mucosa from three different levels of the small intestine (distal duodenum, mid-jejunum and terminal ileum) was obtained. The intracellular 5-HT levels before and after stimulation were studied cytofluorimetrically in biopsies treated according to the Falck-Hillarp technique. One group of cats was pretreated with propranolol prior to stimulation. This prevented the decrease in fluorescence intensity effectively. Two other groups of cats were pretreated with phenoxybenzamine or phentolamine. These drugs also blocked the expected decrease in fluorescence intensity in 7 of 8 cats. In some biopsies there was an increased fluorescence intensity after nerve stimulation in cats given propranolol or phentolamine even though the drugs themselves had no intrinsic effects on the fluorescence intensity in control animals. It is concluded that efferent electrical stimulation of the splanchnic nerves can cause a release of 5-HT from gut EC by an adrenergic mechanism.

Notizen: Summary The content of acetylcholine (ACh) and activities of the cholinergic enzymes choline acetyltransferase (CAT) and ACh-esterase (AChE) were studied in intact and crushed rat sciatic nerve afterchronic nicotine administration andwithdrawal 2 days before the final experiment. Nicotine was given in the drinking water during 8–10 weeks and the final dose reached was about 8 mg/kg/day, i.e. equivalent to that of the heavy cigarette smoker. In thechronic nicotine group, ACh levels and AChE activity of uncrushed nerve were significantly decreased as compared to the controls. The accumulation of ACh and AChE proximal to a single crush was also somewhat decreased, but significant only for AChE at 18 hours postoperatively. Afterwithdrawal of nicotine for 2 days the ACh content of both uncrushed and 12 hours crushed nerves were further decreased, while AChE was instead increased to control (uncrushed) or even supranormal (18-hour crush) levels.

Notizen: Summary The influence of descending bulbospinal monoamine (MA) neurons on the intra-axonal transport of acetylcholine (ACh) and related enzymes (cholineacetyltransferase, CAT, and ACh-esterase, AChE) in rat sciatic nerve was studied in crush experiments following intracisternal injections of specific neurotoxins. The injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) and 5, 6-dihydroxytryptamine (5, 6-diOH-TA) (50μg×2) caused a degeneration of catecholamine (CA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) nerve terminals, respectively, and a combination of the two neurotoxins caused a loss of virtually all MA terminals in the lumbar spinal cord. The results of the neurotoxin injections were controlled by the Falck-Hillarp fluorescence method. The effect of neurotoxin treatment on the enzyme activities in the sciatic nerve was very small. The ACh levels of uncrushed nerves and in nerves proximal to a crush performed 12 hours before dissection decreased following either 6-OH-DA or 5, 6-diOH-TA. However, the combined treatment with both 6-OH-DA and 5, 6-diOH-TA had no influence on ACh accumulation and transport, as compared to the control group. In a previous study we have shown that mid-thoracic spinal cord transection increased AChE-transport while ACh-transport was decreased. The results of this study indicate that the bulbospinal MA neurons may be involved (perhaps indirectly) in the regulation of ACh levels and transport in motor neurons, but less important for the modulation of the cholinergic enzymes.

Notizen: Summary Rapid bacterial colonization of the gastrointestinal tract takes place immediately after birth. Only a few of theEscherichia coli strains colonizing the gut of healthy full-term neonates expressed MS pili. On the other hand, mostE. coli strains isolated carried MR pili resembling the P-fimbriae which are a known virulence factor for pyelonephritogenicE. coli. The presence of serum antibodies against pili and K antigens ofE. coli after vaccination did not influence the capacity ofE. coli to colonize and persist in the intestine of experimental animals.

Notizen: Abstract The earlier preliminary assignment of a 1,055±6 keV proton line to direct proton decay of147Tm is supported by cross bombardment measurements and by a negative result from a positron-proton coincidence experiment. The half-life was remeasured to be 0.56 ±0.04s. For two types of thermal ion sources, overall efficiencies were estimated for on-line mass separation of known short-lived isotopes of promethium, europium, terbium, and holmium. Direct proton decay was searched for among very neutron-deficient isotopes of these elements, and of iodine and caesium. No evidence for direct proton decay was found. Based on estimated overall efficiencies, on calculated cross-sections, and on predictions from the gross-theory ofβ decay, half-life limits for direct proton decay were deduced.
