    Notes: Peanut and cottonseed meals prepared from seed inoculated with A. parasiticus were treated in a laboratory ammoniator under three sets of heat and pressure. Detoxification of the meal was similar for all treatments. Nitrogen solubility, methionine, lysine, available lysine, sugars, immunochemical and gel-electrophoretic protein patterns were measured on all samples. Differences between the unammoniated meals and those treated under the mildest conditions of heat and pressure were negligible. Meals ammoniated under the harsher conditions showed reductions in methionine, lysine, and available lysine contents and in free sugars as well as changes in nitrogen solubility and gel-electrophoretic patterns.

Mutagenicity, as measured by the Ames test, is reduced 450-fold compared to that of B1, and toxicity, as measured by the chick embryo test, is reduced 18-fold.

    Notes: Abstract The toxic and carcinogenic properties of aflatoxins are well understood, but little is known about the biological activity of the anthraquinone precursors of aflatoxin. This paper describes a dry column chromatographic method for preparing averantin, averufin, norsolorinic acid and versicolorin A from mycelial extracts of blocked mutants of Aspergillus parasiticus in quantities suitable for toxicological testing.

    Notes: Abstract The production of aflatoxins by Aspergillus flavus SRRC-1000 growing on soybean (Forrest) and glandless cottonseed (Deltapine 16) meals was examined with respect to effects of zinc and phytate. Aflatoxins were not produced on unautoclaved soybean meal. Addition of zinc (as zinc sulfate) to autoclaved meal inhibited aflatoxin production and supplementation with sodium phytate relieved this inhibition. Addition of sodium phytate alone promoted production. When cottonseed meal was treated to release native phytate into the meal from phytate-sequestering globoids, aflatoxin production increased. However, the largest production on cottonseed meal occurred upon dialysis of the meal without releasing phytate, implying removal of a small molecular weight inhibitor.
