Summary An antibiotic which is to be used for the treatment of infections in gynecology and obstetrics should, in addition to having a broad-spectrum and high degree of antibacterial activity, yield sufficiently high levels of the active substance in inflammed tissues. The present study reports the tissue concentrations in the uterus and adnexa 1–4 hours after i. v. administration of 1 g and 2 g of cefotaxime respectively. The average tissue concentration 1–2 hours after administration of 1 g cefotaxime ranged from 0.5–0.9 µg/g; 2–4 hours after administration of 2 g of cefotaxime concentrations of active substance ranging from 0.26–0.40 µg/g were found. Considering the extremely low minimal inhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime, this newly developed cephalosporin provides a reliable antibiotic for use in gynecology.

Zusammenfassung Das Antibiotikum, das bei der Behandlung von Infektionen in der Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe zum Einsatz kommen soll, sollte neben einem breiten Spektrum und hoher antibakterieller Aktivität ausreichend hohe Wirkstoffspiegel im entzündeten Gewebe erreichen. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt die Konzentration im Gewebe von Uterus und Adnexen 1–4 Stunden nach i. v. Gabe von 1 g bzw. 2 g Cefotaxim. Die durchschnittliche Gewebekonzentration lag 1–2 Stunden nach Gabe von 1 g Cefotaxim zwischen 0,5–0,9 µg/g; 2–4 Stunden nach Gabe von 2 g Cefotaxim wurden Wirkstoffspiegel von 0,26–0,40 µg/g ermittelt. Unter Berücksichtigung der extrem niedrigen minimalen Hemmkonzentrationen von Cefotaxim steht dem Gynäkologen mit diesem neuentwickelten Cephalosporin für die Therapie von Infektionen ein zuverlässiges Präparat zur Verfügung.
