    Notes: Summary Absorption procedures which allow the production of a selectively cytotoxic anti-human lymphocyte serum are described. Although the production of a reagent whose reactivity is restricted exclusively to lymphocytes may be achieved by exhaustive absorption steps using fresh human erythrocytes, CML cells, and fetal liver cells, a more realistic alternative is the use of appropriately selected cultured human leukemia cell lines. Data are presented which show how these cell lines may be employed to selectively manipulate the crossreactivity spectrum of ALS. Pre-treatment of donor bone marrow cells prior to transplantation with a selectively lymphocytotoxic ALS has been shown to allow transplantation of bone marrow across major histocompatibility barriers in rodents without the occurrence of GvH reactions, and it is the purpose of the present investigations to show that an analogous anti-human ALS can be prepared which possesses the required degree of selectivity to allow its application for human bone marrow transplantation.

    Notes: Summary Fibroblastic reticulum cells of different lymphoid organs were investigated to clarify their relationship to other stationary cells of the lymphoid tissue and to fibroblasts of the connective tissue. Fibroblastic reticulum cells have many ultrastructural characteristics of fibroblasts but differ from them in containing prominent bundles of microfilaments and in reacting strongly with antibodies to smooth muscle type myosin and actin. The fibroblastic reticulum cell may be thus classified as a myofibroblast. Enzyme-histochemical studies showed that fibroblastic reticulum cells contain a definite alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme. During ontogeny fibroblastic and dendritic reticulum cells are derived from the local mesenchyme and may be considered as primary stationary reticulum cells. During the formation of the follicle in the splenic white pulp in young rats fibroblastic and dendritic reticulum cells show a different turnover which speaks in favor of a proliferation of dendritic reticulum cells or their precursors in follicle formation.

    Notes: Summary In order to establish an experimental model for the study of immunological reactions to exogenic immunogens in the upper and lower respiratory system NMRI mice were subjected to inhalation of the mitogenic and inflammatory response inducing lectin concanavalin A (Con A) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). Immunological reactions were induced in the upper respiratory tract and in the lungs. Serologically, the course of the antibody titre was measured by radio-immunoassay over several weeks. Germinal centre reactions in the nose and paranasal sinus equivalents were the morphological correlate. The lungs showed an increase in the number of macrophages and a thickening of the alveolocapillary membrane, but no germinal centre reactions were observed. These morphological and serological results may indicate a priming of the immune response in the upper respiratory tract leading to a subsequent production of antibodies in the lung.
