Notes: Abstract A modulated far-infrared laser interferometer which is presently operating on the PDX experiment at Princeton is described. The interferometer geometry permits the characterization of inside “D”, outside “D” as well as circular discharges. To achieve this versatility, a titanium corner cube reflector, mounted inside the PDX vacuum vessel is used in conjunction with a second visible wavelength interferometer for vibration corrections. In addition, the use of room temperature quasi-optical Schottky diodes in the far-infrared interferometer is reported. The minimum detectable line average density of the system is ∼5×1011 cm−3.

Notes: Abstract Distortion-free intracavity polarization modulation of an optically pumped CH3OH laser is shown to be viable. The possible use of this modulation technique to make a multichannel Faraday rotation measurement on a Tokamak device is discussed. In addition, the CdTe Faraday modulator employed in this study is shown to have an anomalously large Verdet constant.

Notes: Abstract A narrow line optically pumped D2O laser operating at 385 μm has delivered more than 5J in pulses longer than 3 μsec using a large aperture unstable resonator cavity design. Pulse levels 〉1J, 1 μsec are necessary for a single shot ion temperature measurement by Thomson scattering in large tokamaks. Experiments have, for the most part, been conducted at a 360J, 5 μsec CO2 laser pump level where high efficiency (∼ 2.5 J at 385 μm) has been obtained. These are the highest energies reported to date in the far infrared. In addition, the pulse length has been extended beyond the vibrational relaxation time.
