Notes: Summary Two ova implanted in one uterus were found at the autopsy of a 28-year-old woman. The ovulation age of both implantations has been estimated to be 10–12 days. The presence of two equally large corpora lutea, one in each ovary, indicates that the implanted ova originated from different ovaries. Thus, an “ovulatio biovarialis” seems to be the basis for the dizygotic twinning in this case. The case is believed to be the only documented example of a very early dizygotic, fraternal pregnancy in humans.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The method of current splitting can be extended for arrangements with diversified permeable spaces. Accordingly, model equations are put foreward, which transfer the original to a model of constant permeability. Discontinuities of magnetic field strength, occuring in this model, yield to distributed currents in the boundary surface. The method of current splitting extended in this way, is applied to the current calculations of a metal-clad conductor and compared with the analytical approximation.

Notes: Summary From February to November 1981 the diagnostic relevance of ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was compared prospectively in 75 patients with suspected pancreatic disease. Final diagnosis was confirmed by autopsy, surgery, clinical course, and further laboratory data. Thus it was possible to exclude pancreatic disorders in 32 patients. By ERCP we diagnosed all tumors; sensitivity was 100%. Sensitivity of US and CT were 63% each. In five cases US made the false positive diagnosis” pancreatic malignant tumor” (specifity 93%), CT and ERCP in two cases (specifity 97% each). In chronic pancreatitis specifity of US and ERCP were 100% and specifity of CT was 98%. Sensitivity of ERCP amounted to 93%, CT and US revealed 74% and 52%, respectively. We conclude that ERCP is the best morphologic diagnostic tool in differentiating chronic pancreatitis from pancreatic carcinoma. US is a good screening method and CT reveals good diagnostic results in acute pancreatitis.

Notes: Summary In isotonic and isometric goal-directed index finger movements made as fast as possible, the “braking hypothesis” ascribed to the antagonist burst was tested. Under isotonic conditions, the extensor burst often failed to occur in small angle movements with low inertial load. It regularly occurred, however, in small angle movements with high inertial load and in wide angle movements with both low and high inertial loads. Such features suggest, indeed, the antagonist burst as being part of braking strategies. Under isometric conditions, the antagonist burst — if it occurred — exhibited characteristics which suggested a rapidly alternating movement rather than a braking strategy.

Notes: Summary The onset of water stress within a crop is defined as the time at which the rate of water loss declines below that of a well watered crop in the same locality. The relation to the onset of water stress and soil water status of several readily measured plant parameters was investigated in crops of wheat and soybeans over three years. Evapotranspiration ET was monitored with weighing lysimeters. A noticeable decline in the rate of ET for both wheat and soybeans was detected once 20% to 30% of the total plant available water PAW remained in the 1 m deep lysimeter soil profile. Extension growth of wheat declined when PAW was 33% and 34% in two years of measurement. In soybeans, the decline in the rate of leaf extension coincided with the decline in the rate of ET. Midmorning measurement of exposed leaf water potential ψL, covered leaf water potential ψCL and covered plant leaf water potential ψCP yielded similar results for both wheat and soybeans. Day-to-day variability was least in ψCP and most in ψL. Values of ψCP, ψL and ψCL decreased rapidly with PAW 〈 30%. Daily values of leaf diffusive conductance were variable but there was a general decline in conductance with PAW 〈 30%. It is suggested that ψCL may be the easiest and most reliable parameter to monitor as a means of detecting the onset of stress. The results indicated that PAW levels in the root zone of 50% for wheat and 30% for soybean probably do not affect extension growth or plant water status parameters and can thus be used as criteria for irrigation scheduling.

Notes: Summary Systemic candidiasis developed in a seven-week-old premature baby after 6 weeks treatment with antibiotics for suspected septicemia. At that time the echocardiogram showed a dense layer of echoes posteriorly to the anterior tricuspid leaflet during atrial systole. The diagnosis of Candida endocarditis with vegetations on the tricuspid valve and with right atrial thrombus secondary to the Candida infection was verified by autopsy.

Notes: Summary The traumatic mediastinal emphysema occurs along with severe combined injuries. A typical feature is the subcutaneous emphysema as well as crackling sounds and frequently a pneumothorax. The radiography of the chest shows air in the mediastinum surrounding the mediastinal structures. The pleura drainage could be done as an emergency performance in cases of pneumothorax. In cases of an increasing subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema as well as circulatory failure a cervical mediastinotomy should be carried out. The tracheobronchial tree should be examined bronchoscopically for possible ruptures. Esophagus injuries will be detected by the distribution of a contrast fluid. Even a thoracotomy may be necessary.

Notes: Abstract The differential cross section of the reactionγ+p→π + was measured at pion CM-angles of 20° and 30° for photon energies between 500 MeV and 1,400 MeV. The pions were detected in a magnetic spectrometer. By measuring each pion trajectory and by offline calculation of the initial pion parameters an energy resolution of about 2.5% FWHM was achieved. The results complete a set of data which were measured in recent years at the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron. In comparison to photoproduction analyses two effects were revealed: The η cusp appears in the energy dependence of the cross section as a sharp drop atK γ=710 MeV. In the region of the third resonance the data show a greater enhancement than predicted by most of the analyses.

Notes: Abstract We present an analysis of minimum bias events from proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt s = 7GeV$$ in the CERN ISR. We remove the effects of both the leading protons and compare theB=0 mesonic residue of the events to the hadronic events of similar energy produced ine + e − collisions. This comparison is presented in terms of the standard jet-type analyses involving quantities such as sphericity and aplanarity. We find significant differences between these data and the data frome + e − annihilations. The data of this experiment are consistent with the predictions of a longitudinal phase space model.
