Notes: Abstract A series of experiments for growing epitaxial PLZT thin films has been made with rf sputtering. X-ray and electron diffraction analyses confirm that the fabricated films grow epitaxially on SrTiO3 and MgO crystals. A good transparency in the region above 0.4 μm to infrared with good ferroelectric properties is obtained. Propagation loss of He−Ne laser light is less than 6 dB/cm, and the PLZT thin film is a promising candidate for the optical modulator and other functional elements for integrated optics.

Notes: Summary Haematoma in the basal cistern was classified into five grades. A little or moderate haematoma (1 + or 2 +) disappeared from the basal cistern in 3 or 4 days, however much or severe haematoma (3 + or 4 +) remained over a week. Vasospasm occurred in a high number of the cases in which the haematoma was recognized in the basal cistern later than 4 days after SAH not only in operative case but also in conservative case. However vasospasm occurred rarely in cases with early operation within 24 hours after onset except for cases with severe packed haematoma (4+) in the basal cistern.

Notes: Sera from forty patients with house-dust-mite-sensitive bronchial asthma were examined for the presence of circulating immune complexes (CIC) by the sensitive and quantitative CIq solid-phase radioimmunoassay (Clq-SP) and a monoclonal rheumatoid factor solid-phase radioimmunoassay (mRF-SP). Compared to fifteen normal individuals, the asthmatic patients showed significantly higher mean values of Clq-reactive materials; however, there was no difference between the results from the patients treated by immunotherapy using Dermatophagoides farinae extract and those not so treated. Moreover, immune complexes in eight patients before and after immunotherapy showed that the amount of the complexes tend to decrease during immunotherapy. Furthermore, the presence of complexes had no relationship with the amounts of mite-specific IgG antibody. Similar results were also obtained in tests using mRF-SP. These data suggest that complexes in the sera of the house-dust-mite-sensitive asthmatic patients are not necessarily associated either with immunotherapy or with the mite-specific IgG antibodies.

Notes: Quantification of human basophil degranulation induced by anti-IgE, anti-IgG4, and by ionophore was performed using a flow-cytometric system. It was shown that these antibodies and ionophore can degranulate basophils in a dose-dependent manner, and that there is a wide variation in the response of basophils obtained from different individuals to these stimuli. A significant correlation was observed between the degree of degranulation induced by anti-IgE and anti-IgG4, while this was not the case for anti-IgE and ionophore. It was also shown that IgG4 myeloma protein can passively sensitize basophils. In general, degranulating efficacy was in the order of ionophore 〉 anti-IgE 〉anti-IgG4, both in allergic and non-allergic individuals.

Notes: Skin tests with histamine, the histamine-liberator, codeine, and various allergens as well as blood basophil degranulation by anti-IgE or anti-IgG4 and total serum IgE levels have been studied in two female populations of different ages (average 23-1 and 73-9 years). All thirty-one patients selected for this study were clinically non-allergic.We observed a trend towards reduced skin reactions to histamine and codeine in the higher age-group; on the other hand, we could not find any decrease of basophil degranulation as a sign of basophil impairment with age. Likewise no difference in total serum IgE levels have been noticed. No correlation between skin tests and basophil degranulation was observed; yet patients with isolated, positive skin tests to house dust and/or Candida albicans showed a statistically significant reduced blood basophil degranulation by anti-IgE or anti-IgG4.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a mathematical mechanism for neuronal synchronization in oscillatory brain activities on the basis of the layer structures with recurrent inhibition. To begin with, a linear theory reveals that the recurrent inhibition tends to cause a synchronous uniform oscillation if the loop delay increases, and that an oscillating neuron recruits neighboring neurons by delivering synchronous inputs through the recurrent inhibition loop if the frequency is that of the selfexcitatory oscillation. Then, a quasilinearized dual wave model (DWM), employing the two-sinusoids plus bias input describing functions (TSBDF), shows the competitive relationship between the synchronous oscillation and a spatial wave that is introduced to represent normal brain activity patterns. Results of computer simulations conform well to the predictions of the DWM. Thus, synchronous brain activities are suggested to be the result of the spatiotemporal filter characteristics of the brain layer structures, modified by the neural nonlinearity.
