    Notes: Summary Oxythiamine reversed the growth inhibition ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae caused by pyrithiamine, although oxythiamine alone inhibited yeast cell growth. This phenomenon was explained by thiamine production from these 2 thiamine antagonists which was demonstrated using cell suspensions and the crude extract ofS. cerevisiae.

    Notes: Summary The hapatic transport of thiamine phosphates was studied in isolated rat hepatocytes. No significant radioactivity of14C-thiamine monophosphate and14C-thiamine pyrophosphate was incorporated into liver cells freshly isolated using the collagenase-perfusion technique. The result indicates that neither thiamine phosphates nor their thiamine moiety are available for liver cells.

    Notes: Summary Methylene blue was found to inhibit thiamine transport competitively (Ki=0.63 μM) in baker's yeast. The dye was also effective in abolishing the growth inhibition ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae by pyrithiamine which is known to be taken up by a common transport system for thiamine in yeast cells. A possible mechanism for the inhibition by methylene blue of the thiamine transport system in baker's yeast is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Dimethialium, a derivative of thiamine which has a methyl group in place of hydroxyethyl group at the 5-position of the thiazole moiety, was found to be accumulated in nonproliferating cells ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae by the same transport mechanism for thiamine. The results strongly support the supposition that thiamine as well as dimethialium can be transported and accumulated without obligatory phosphorylation in yeast cells, since dimethialium is not phosphorylated by yeast thiamine pyrophosphokinase.

    Notes: Summary Basic dyes such as methylene blue and triphenyltetrazolium chloride were found to inhibit thiamine transport inSaccharomyces cerevisiae. Conversely, the reduction of methylene blue and triphenyltetrazolium chloride by yeast cells was inhibited by thiamine. A thiamine transport mutant ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae showed decreased utilization of these dyes. From the results, the possibility that the uptake of basic dyes may proceed via a membrane-bound thiamine-binding protein in the thiamine transport system of the yeast is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Polyethylene glycol-modified enzymes dissolved and had high enzymic activity in organic solvents. A trace amount of water was found to be necessary for the activity. It was reasoned that the amphipathic polymer covalently attached to enzymes kept water molecules around them. This was supported by findings that : (1) high enzymic activity was found in water- immiscible solvents, whereas activity was never observed in water-miscible solvents; (2) enzymic activity was inhibited by increasing the concentration of dimethyl sulfoxide in benzene; (3) activity of lipase was inhibited by a water-miscible alcohol substrate, but was steadily elevated by increasing the concentration of a water-immiscible alcohol substrate; (4) water was not absorbed from benzene solution containing a modified enzyme by molecular sieves, while it was easily absorbed in the presence of a water-miscible organic solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide.

    Notes: Summary Lipoprotein lipase modified with polyethylene glycol dissolved in benzene, and catalyzed various reactions of ester synthesis, ester exchange and aminolysis. This modified enzyme had a high stability; 50% of the initial enzymic activity were retained after about 3 months-storage in benzene at room temperature. We can repeatedly re-use the enzyme by recovering from benzene solution; the enzyme precipitates upon addition of n-hexane(or petroleum ether).

    Notes: Abstract The problem of the optimal synthesis of heat exchanger systems is treated here with an entirely new approach. It is formulated, using the heat spectrum diagram, as a problem of finding the combination of heat donors and receivers that will minimize a given criterion function. This function is the cost of the heat exchanger system, assumed to be proportional to the total heat-transfer area. The problem is a combinatorial problem for continuous elements. It is solved in general by applying the maximum principle of Pontryagin. The solution for a specific problem is shown to be obtainable by a simple graphical operation.

    Notes: The absorption of dilute SO2 into aqueous double slurries containing CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2 was carried out using a stirred tank with a plane gas-liquid interface. The absorption rate increased and finally reached that under the completely gas-film controlled conditions as the absorption process proceeded. The desulfurization process using the double slurry was formulated by a two-reaction-plane model in which there are no particles suspended in-between the interface and the primary reaction plane. It was suggested from comparison of the experimental absorption rates with the theoretical predictions that 40 to 60% of the absorbed sulfur dioxide may be present as an effective magnesium sulfite ion pair.

    Notes: A new flexible method has been developed for modelling multistage multicomponent separation processes. The method is based on the simultaneous modular approach and can be referred to as a quasilinear two-level modelling. The network is solved within each iteration as a linear one, and after each network solution the split streams are updated modularly using nonlinear submodels. The method is suited for modelling the most important separation processes with arbitrary structure and permits to use different models for the subunits or processing units. Illustrative examples and computational results are presented showing the efficiency, flexibility and capability of the method.
