Notes: Abstract Numerous scheelite-mineralized areas have been located in the Caledonian fold belt of Central East Greenland (70° – 74 1/2° N). The fold belt comprises Archaean and Proterozoic metamorphic complexes flanked by Late Proterozoic and Lower Palaeozoic sediments, and intruded by Upper Proterozoic and Caledonian granitic rocks. Scheelite mineralization occurs in: marble-skarns in Upper Proterozoic metasediments often spatially associated with Caledonian or older granitic intrusives; skarns and quartz veins in Late Proterozoic sediments (Lower EBG quartzite) up to 7 km from outcropping Caledonian granites; veins in fault zones cutting late Proterozoic sediments (Upper EBG limestones). In this paper, the three types are described with emphasis on structural setting, mineralogy and trace-element chemistry. It is concluded that most scheelite mineralization is associated with Caledonian igneous activity, either at or near granite contacts or as mineralization distal to granites at depth. Of the various types described, the scheelite veins in Late Proterozoic limestone are considered to be of the best economic potential.

Notes: Abstract Aertsen et al. (1979) studied single unit recordings from the cochlear nucleus and the auditory cortex of the cat using a stimulus with a wide range of natural and technical sounds and discussed the question of the existence of a stimulus-event relation. The existence of such a stimulus-event relation was investigated by presenting the stimulus twice while recording the spike trains and studying the degree of reproducibility of the neural activity under the two presentations of the stimulus. This paper presents a statistical method to decide whether the two recordings of neural activity are similar, and if so to quantify the degree of similarity. The method is of potential use in multi-unit recordings.

Notes: Abstract A 2-year-old deeply mentally handicapped girl is reported with a multiple synostosis syndrome, as delineated by Maroteaux et al. (1972). Besides the multiple synostoses the peculiar facial dysmorphism and the hearing deficit allow, the clinical diagnosis of this apparently rare syndrome.

Notes: Abstract A partial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 9 is reported in a female newborn and a 12.5 yearold male. The features expressed by both patients, and especially the peculiar type of the craniofacial dysmorphism, confirm the existence of a typical clinical syndrome associated with this partial autosomal monosomy.

Notes: Summary The efficacy of terbutaline inhaled from different aerosol systems was studied in 13 adult asthmatics. Terbutaline 1 mg was delivered from a pressurised aerosol, 1 and 4 mg were inhaled from a nebuliser, 1 mg was inhaled through a pressurised aerosol with a pear-shaped, 750 ml spacer, and 1 mg was inhaled from a nebuliser with Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (I.P.P.V.). An open, randomized, cross-over design was used. The bronchodilator effect was evaluated by recording hourly flow-volume curves and the FEV1.0 for 5 h after treatment. No significant difference in bronchodilatation was observed after inhalation of 1 mg terbutaline from different aerosol systems, except following use of the nebuliser, which required approximately four times as much terbutaline to obtain the same effect as the ordinary spray.

Notes: Ultrasonic scanning in patients with symptoms of threatened abortion occasionally revealed an echo-free area between the membranes and the uterine wall. The echo-free area was found in patients at 11 to 20 weeks gestation who had a live fetus and is believed to represent blood. Seven smaller haematomas of less than 35 ml gradually disappeared and the pregnancies continued until term. Three patients who had haematomas of more than 50 ml subsequently aborted or had a premature delivery.

Notes: Summary In five totally pancreatectomized human subjects the secretion of gut-derived glucagons was stimulated by ingestion of a meal rich in fat and carbohydrates. Glucagon-like immunoreactivity in plasma, measured with an antiserum against the 6–15 sequence, increased fivefold in response to the meal. Glucagon like immunoreactivity measured with an antiserum against the C-terminal sequence was initially normal (12–13 pmol/l), increased slightly (to 20 pmol/l), and then decreased (to approximately 6 pmol/1). The Chromatographic profile of glucagon-like immunoreactivity in plasma at maximum stimulation was studied after concentration by affinity chromatography. Both assay systems identified two peaks (at Kd-values of 0.30 and 0.60–0.65, and 0.30 and 0.70, respectively). The position at Kd 0.70 corresponds to that of glucagon 1–29. The same components may be identified in plasma from normal subjects. It is concluded that the human intestine is capable of generating all of the molecular forms of glucagon which normally are present in plasma.

Notes: Summary Instability of the centromeric regions of chromosomes 1, 9, and 16 in cultured lymphocytes of an 8-month-old girl with malabsorption and combined immunodeficiency is reported. Together with the two previous reports on this condition, the present report seems to confirm the specific association of combined immunodeficiency and centromeric instability of chromosomes 1, 9 and 16 with multibranching.

Notes: Summary The sites of replication and of accumulation of viral macromolecules were examined using fluorescent antibodies to viral products and to cell organelles. Synthesis of envelope protein and its accumulation in a narrow rim around the nucleus were detected at 4 hours post infection; concurrently, a progressive change was observed in the rough endoplasmic reticulum from a fine to a coarse network emanating from around the nucleus. This change in the network was visible by light microscopy. The immunofluorescent sites of viral RNA synthesis, located by use of anti-double stranded RNA, extended from the perinuclear region in another fine network which included many small foci or vesicles; these sites were also visible by light microscopy late in infection. None of these changes were associated with any visible redistribution of actin, intermediate filaments or microtubules, and no nuclear involvement was detected. However, when microtubules were disrupted by vinblastine treatment of cells, the distribution of the immunofluorescent sites of viral RNA synthesis was modified and the virus yield was reduced by at least 10-fold. These results confirmed our biochemical studies showing separation of viral sites of RNA synthesis and translation, and the accumulation of envelope protein in nuclear-associated membranes. The relevance of these observations is discussed in relation to the reports of specific membrane structures induced in flavivirus-infected cells.

Notes: Abstract A NaI sum-spectrometer combined with Ge-counters has been used to characterize the members of the island of high spin isomers nearN=82. On the basis of half lives, totalγ-decay energies and discreteγ-lines, assignments of 22 isomers are given or confirmed. The isomers are localized to the region 82≦N≦86 andZ≦68, and the excitation energies vary from 3 MeV to 12.2 MeV. An empirical relation between spin and excitation energy is presented and on this basis isomeric spin values up to (33±2)ħ are deduced. The isomers are thought to be due to strong alignment of 2 to 8 shell-model particles in a spherical or possibly weakly oblate potential.
