    Notes: Abstract Fibres from different structural parts of the coconut palm tree (Cocos nucifera, linn.) have been examined for properties such as size, density, electrical resistivity, ultimate tensile strength, initial modulus and percentage elongation. The stress-strain diagrams, fracture mode, microfibrillar angle as well as cellulose and lignin contents of these fibres have been determined. The observed properties have been related to the internal structure and chemical composition of the fibres. Some potential uses of these fibres have been listed.

    Notes: Abstract The thermal conductivity of LaCoO3 was measured in air between 300 and 900 K. The conductivity increased sharply from 3.2 to 17.0 W · m−1 · K−1 in this temperature range and showed good agreement with previously published data. An excitonic mode of conduction due to the interaction of the high-low spin states of cobalt is found to be the main contribution to the measured thermal conductivity. Contributions of the other modes of conduction and the excitonic mean free path have been calculated.

    Notes: Abstract The deterioration of coconut leaf thatch, a cheap roofing material, has been studied by following the changes in strength on its exposure to both natural and accelerated environmental conditions such as natural weathering, accelerated conditions of rain and alternate wet and dry climate and micro-organisms such as fungus. Strength was found to decrease with time during deterioration. Scanning electron and stereo-optical microscopes were also used to study the fracture phenomena and surface changes during deterioration. It has been found that the major factors contributing to the deterioration of coconut leaf thatch are identified as rain, alternate wet and dry weather, decay by fungus and the brittle nature of the leaf itself. It appears from the present study that the deterioration of coconut leaf thatch occurs as a result of progressive embrittlement with possible contributions from environmental stress-cracking.

    Notes: Abstract The reproductive cycle of the field crab Paratelphusa hydrodromous (Herbst) was determined by direct field observations as well as by calculating the percentage of ovigerous females in a Madras population for a period of three years. The females breed annually in a single spawning. These observations, corroborated by histological studies on the nature of the ovary, indicate that gametogenic activity starts in December and vitellogenesis is completed during January-May. Spawning commences in the last week of June or first week of July with the release of brood in the month of September (1979), October (1978) or November (1980) during northeast monsoon. The smallest female crab showing spawning had a carapace width of 3.1 cm and the largest spawning crabs measured 5.5 mm. The mean number of eggs spawned in the smallest crab was 247 and that in the largest crab was 417. Mean incubation was 41 ± 12.388 days. Vitellogenesis and spawning occurred at peak temperature conditions. Though the time taken for vitellogenesis and commencement of spawning were constant for the study period, the duration of retention of the juveniles in the brood varied with the onset of monsoon.
