    Notes: Abstract The newly derived dynamic-crack-branching criterion with its modifications is verified by the dynamicphotoelastic results of dynamic crack branchings in thinpolycarbonate, single-edged crack-tension specimens. Successful crack branching was observed in four specimens and unsuccessful branching in another. Crack branching consistently occurred when the necessary conditions ofK I =K I b =3.3 MPa $$\sqrt m$$ and the sufficiency condition ofr o =r c =0.75 mm were satisfied simultaneously. In the unsuccessful branching test, the necessary condition was not satisfied sinceK I was always less thanK I b .

    Notes: Abstract A dynamic-crack-curving criterion, which is valid under pure Mode I or combined Modes I and II loadings and which is based on either the maximum circumferential stress or minimum strain-energy-density factor at a reference distance ofr 0 from the crack tip, is verified with dynamic-photoelastic experiments.     Notes: Abstract The mixed mode, near-field state of stresses sourrounding a crack propagating at constant velocity is used to derive a relation between the dynamic stress-intensity factorsK I,K II, the remote stress component σ ox and the dynamic isochromatics. This relation, together with an over-deterministic least-square method, form the basis of a datareduction procedure for extracting dynamic,K I,K II and σ ox from the recorded dynamic photoelastic pattern surrounding a running crack. The overdeterministic least-square method is also used to fit static isochromatics to the numerically generated dynamic isochromatics. The resultant staticK I,K II and σ ox are compared with the corresponding dynamic values and estimats of errors involved in using static analysis to process dynamic isochromatic data are obtained. The data-reduction procedure is then used to evaluate the branching stress-intensity factor associated with crack branching and the mixed-mode stress-intensity factors associated with crack curving.
