    Notes: Summary Three electrophoretic variants of superoxide dismutase can be detected in bovine erythrocytes by gel electrophoresis and electrofocusing. The two major forms, having isoelectric points at pH 5.2 and 4.9, were isolated by preparative focusing or chromatography. No differences were found in molecular weight, metal content, antigenicity, electron spin resonance spectrum, visible and ultraviolet optical spectra. In contrast, holo- and apo-superoxide dismutase, which have an electrophoretic mobility similar to that of the two major forms, showed unresolved isoelectric points but significantly different antigenicity. This result suggests that their different electrophoretic mobility is mainly conformation-related. The variant with pl 5.2, corresponding to the protein purified by ordinary procedures, was found to be inactivated by heat treatment faster than the other form. The latter one, on the other hand, gave rise to a multiple pattern of electrophoretic bands after incubation at 75 °C. It is suggested that superoxide dismutase multiplicity in erythrocytes is not genetically determined, but may be related to segregation of subunits, made non-identically by post translational asymmetrical modification.

    Notes: Summary The activity of the SOD Cu/Zn gene in balanced and unbalanced carriers of the 21/D and 21/G translocations is compared to that of subjects with free trisomy 21 and with normal karyotype. The results show that the translocation of the 21 chromosome has no effect on the activity of the SOD Cu/Zn gene.

    Notes: Abstract OH radicals, produced by the electrochemical reduction of solutions containing both oxygen and iron(III) oxidize cyclohexane to cydohexanone int-BuOH/H2O/HCl media; in some experiments cyclohexanol was also produced. The use of a non-chloride medium or the use of Ti(III) instead of Fe(II) leads to a remarkable decrease in the yields. These results are interpreted by a mechanism involving the intermediate formation of Cl radicals.

    Notes: Abstract Benzaldehyde can be produced from toluene by an electrochemical process involving OH radicals. In the cathodic compartment of the electrolytic cell the reduction of molecular O2 and of a metal ion Mox, are simultaneously carried out in the presence of a toluene suspension. Mox is the oxidized form of a redox couple such as V(V)/V(IV), V(IV)/V(III), Cu(II)/Cu(I); the electrogenerated H2O2 and the reduced metal ion generates OH radicals and Mox, which is converted back to the reduced form at the electrode. The reactivity of the redox couples examined were compared from the point of view of their effectiveness for the toluene oxidation process. In some cases, current yields very close to the theoretical ones could be obtained.
