Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of atenolol were determined following acute intravenous and chronic oral administration to 20 subjects with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) between 5 and 113 ml/min. Plasma levels in a further 5 patients on haemodialysis were measured after intravenous treatment. The mean half life of elimination increased from 5.9 h in patients with normal renal function to 42.1 h in preuraemic patients (GFR 〈10 ml/min) following a single i. v. dose. The half life of elimination following chronic oral administration was not significantly different. Mean peak plasma concentrations increased from 540 ng/ml in patients with normal renal function to 1493 ng/ml in preuraemic patients following chronic oral treatment with 100 mg/day. The mean half life of elimination during a single haemodialysis treatment was 4.3 h. In patients with a GFR 〉30 ml/min the normal daily dose of atenolol should be employed, in patients with a GFR between 10 and 30 ml/min the dose should be reduced by half, and in patients with a GFR 〈10 ml/min a reduction by three quarters of the normal dose is recommended.

Notes: Summary In a retrospective study 143 chronic subdural haematomas in 120 patients were analysed. 64% of patients were 60 years or older. All haematomas were operated on by slightly enlarged burr-hole craniotomy and closed system drainage for three days postoperatively. A history of trauma was present in 63%. Most frequent symptoms in the older patients were mental changes and impaired consciousness. Postoperative mortality (within one month after surgery) was 4%. After a follow-up period of up to 2.5 years after surgery, 69% were neurologically normal, 20% had only minor complaints or slight deficits. Postoperative CT scans showed a gradual re-expansion of the compressed brain during the 2–3 weeks following haematoma removal.

Notes: Summary When deplasticized Epon sections were treated with endo- and/or exopeptidases prior to incubation with antibodies, the neuropeptide immunoreactivity of secretory nerves was often altered in a predictable way. Cleavage of neurosecretory material in octopus nerves by trypsin and carboxypeptidase-B enhanced enkephalin-like immunoreactivity, while Molluscan neuropeptide-like immunoreactivity was prevented by tryptic cleavage. The enzyme effects indicated the occurrence of a heptapeptide (Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met/Leu-Arg-Phe) that contains both the enkephalin and the Molluscan neuropeptide sequence. Vasopressin terminals of the rat neurohypophysis, which presumably contain enkephalin precursor sequences, exhibited enkephalin-like immunostaining after tryptic cleavage. ACTH/β-endorphin cells of the rat intermediate pituitary, which synthesize the enkephalin sequence at the N-terminus of β-endorphin, exhibited enkephalin-like immunoreactivity when sections were treated with α-chymotrypsin or trypsin, but not after incubation with leucine-aminopeptidase or carboxypeptidase-B. Enkephalin-like immunostaining could not be induced in any way in ACTH/β-endorphin cells of the anterior pituitary. Enzymatic cleavage may give additional information in immunocytochemical localization studies on neuropeptide sequences in secretory nerves and hormonal granules.

Notes: Abstract Four lines of Ephestia kühniella each homozygous for one of three different allozyme alleles at the Est-2 locus and two alleles at the Adh locus were crossed in order to study the extent of somatic, reproductive and adaptive heterosis in F1 hybrids in comparison with the mean performance of the simultaneously reared inbred parent lines. With regard to adult weight and wing length (somatic heterosis) hybrids exhibit maximally 20% (males 10%) and 9% heterosis, respectively. As concerns the production of eggs and hatched larvae (reproductive heterosis) hybrids exceed the parental mean by 90% and 200%. Adaptive heterosis is realized by a shorter development period of the hybrids (maximally by 30%) as well as by significant lower variance of all metrical characters studied. In the F2 the degree of heterosis diminishes. There is neither an excess of heterozygotes among the segregating allozyme genotypes nor superior performance of the heterozygotes concerning any one of the traits studied. Therefore, it is concluded that the pronounced heterosis in F1 is not a single-gene-heterosis operating at the Est-2 and the Adh-locus.

Notes: A new merocyanine was prepared by addition of the pyrrolidine enamine of N-ethoxycarbonylpyrrolidine-3-one to 1-octyne-3-one. This addition was regioselective (with an unexpected C-4 alkylation of the pyrrolidinone-3-enamine) and stereospecific (exclusively trans addition to the triple bond). The structure and conformational equilibrium were studied by high resolution proton magnetic resonance (NOE and variable temperature effects). Activation parameters ΔH*, ΔS* and ΔG* are given, and the behaviour on protonation examined.
