Notes: Summary Serial studies by endoscopy and biopsy were made in a Beagle dog during and after oral administration of N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). Between the 23rd and the 45th week of observation erosions and ulcers appeared at the angulus of the stomach and turned into ulcer scar. A depression with atypical glands was seen in the ulcer scar of the posterior wall of the angulus at the 94th week. It developed elevated margins at the 102nd week, when a well differentiated adenocarcinoma was found histopathologically. Ulceration and reepithelialization were observed in the early carcinoma. The carcinoma progressed into a larger one of Borrmann's type 2 at the 115th week and further into its type 3 at the 181st week. A second carcinoma with signet ring cell carcinoma developed in the anterior wall of the angulus. The two carcinomas fused and formed a single lesion. At autopsy in the 216th week the carcinoma invaded the serosa, and metastasis to regional lymph nodes was observed.

Notes: Summary Human anterior pituitary cells derived from a somatotropin-secreting adenoma were capable of generating action potentials with Ca2+ and tetrodotoxin-sensitive Na+ components. A major fraction of the action current was carried by Na ions.

Notes: Summary Using immunological techniques urinary hCG, pregnancy-specific ß-glycoprotein (SP1) and ß-subunit of hCG (ß-hCG) levels were measured in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with trophoblastic tumours. After removal of hydatidiform moles, urinary hCG, ß-hCG and SP1 levels were similar, but SP1 levels tended to exceed serum ß-hCG levels. SP1 usually disappeared first. In patients with metastatic choriocarcinoma, SP1 levels appeared to be lower than ß-hCG values in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, but urinary hCG, ß-hCG and SP1 concentrations all decreased during chemotherapy. Measurements of SP1 levels may well be useful in the monitoring of patients being treated for trophoblastic tumours.

Notes: Summary Localization of carbonic anhydrase activity was studied electron microscopically on cells of the rat choroid plexus epithelium. For the ultracytochemical detection of these activities, Yokota's technique (1969), which is the modification of Hansson's method (1967) was employed. Numerous electron dense reaction products were observed in the microvilli of the choroidal epithelial cell. The reaction deposits were also remarkably present in the infoldings of the basal plasmalemma but to a lesser extent than in the microvilli. The localization sites were mainly on the plasma membrane, but some reaction products were also observed in the cytoplasm near the plasma membrane. Hardly any reaction product was found in the intracellular organelles except for the mitochondria in which reaction products were occasionally observed on the cristae. These activities were completely inhibited by acetazolamide. As the carbonic anhydrase activity was histochemically seen in the microvilli and the basal infoldings, it is likely that carbonic anhydrase is related to an active transport process in the secretion of cerebrospinal fluid as is Na+, K+-ATPase (Masuzawa et al. 1980).

Notes: Summary The histochemical study of Mg++-activated adenosine triphosphatase (Mg++-ATPase) activity was carried out on the peripheral nerves of mouse digital skin by light and electron microscopy. Under the light microscope, the ATPase activity was clearly demonstrated on the nerve fibers as a fine network in the subepidermal regions. Under the electron microscope, the reaction product of enzyme activity was located in the interspace between axolemma and the surrounding Schwann cells of the unmyelinated nerve fibers. No reaction product was observed in the space between the axolemma and the Schwann cells associated with myelinated nerve fibers. Demonstrable activity was absent at the nodes of Ranvier as well as on the para- and internodal regions of these myelinated axons. The part of the axolemma lacking a Schwann cell sheath failed to show a reaction product. The perineural epithelial cells surrounding the nerve fibers displayed reaction product in the caveolae. These results suggest a functional difference in the axon-Schwann interface of myelinated as compared to unmyelinated nerve fibers. The function of the perineural epithelial cell would be expected to be a regulatory one in transferring materials across the epithelium to keep the proper humoral environment around nerve fibers.

Notes: Summary Electron microscopic cytochemical studies on the rat choroid plexus epithelium have revealed enzymatic sites for the activities of acid phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase and thiamine pyrophosphatase on different organelles. Only the activity of acid phosphatase has been previously described. Acid phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase and thiamine pyrophosphatase were respectively situated mainly in the lysosomes, in the endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear envelope, and in the Golgi complex. These three enzymes can thus be considered as marker enzymes for their respective organelles in the choroid plexus epithelial cells as well as in other tissue cells. The possible function of these enzymes in the choroid plexus epithelial cells is also briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract The time-independent residual gauge invariance of Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories is considered. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the unperturbed Hamiltonian are found in terms of Gegenbauer's polynomials. Physical states which satisfy the subsidiary condition corresponding to Gauss' law are constructed systematically.

Notes: Abstract A radiochemical study has been made to search for dineutron2 n produced in the simultaneous two-neutron emission of the excited6He nuclei,6He*, induced in the reaction of9Be+n→-6He*+α with fast neutrons in a reactor. It was attempted to detect the radio-activity of28Mg as a product of the reaction2 n+27Al→28Mg+p. The28Mg radioactivity observed in heterogeneous samples composed of the2 n-producing target Be and the2 n-detecting target Al separately was not found to be more than that of a side reaction,27Al{(n, p)(n th, γ)+(n th, γ)(n, p)}28Mg, whereas it clearly exceeded that of the side reaction in alloy samples made of Be and Al metals. The former experiment gives an upper limit of the production rate of the dineutron in the bound state 1×10−7 per event of the simultaneous two-neutron emission. A tentative explanation for the excessive28Mg radioactivity observed in the latter experiment is the following two-step process,9Be+n→6He+α and27Al+6He→+28Mg+α+p, rather than the process induced by the dineutron in a virtual state.

Notes: Summary A study was made of the gut content composition ofPorcellio scaber Latr. in the coastal pine sites, and of feeding experiments on naturally occurring needles and artificially treated needles. The gut contents of isopods consisted mainly of fragmentary tissues of needles and subsidiarily of fungal hyphae. The proportion of fungi in the gut varied with the season of the year, the age of isopods and their habitats in relation to fungal density. The more the decay of needles proceeded, the more the needles were preferred and consumed,i.e. brown needles least, dark brown needles intermediate, and blackish brown and yellowish decayed needles most. Irrespective of considerable differences in food consumption of these needles, assimilation was the same and its efficiency decreased with the progress of decay. As far as the needles in the incipient stages of decay are concerned, the structural toughness of needles is considered to be the prominent factor in determining the feeding value of the needles. Of extractive treatments on natural needles, removals of ether- and water-soluble fractions in all kinds of needles reduced drastically both consumption and assimilation.
