Notes: A B-cell subset with Fc receptors for IgA (Bα cells) has been observed in human peripheral blood. To investigate aberrations of B cells in a diseased state, the percentages of Bα cells were enumerated in peripheral blood from patients with IgA nephropathy, which is characterized by preponderant deposition of IgA-dominant immune complexes in the glomerular mesangial area. The present study showed a significant increase in Bα cells in peripheral blood from patients with IgA nephropathy but not in those with chronic proliferative glomerulo-nephritis without mesangial IgA deposition. Most FcαR-bearing cells were observed in surface IgA bearing lymphocytes. No linear correlation was observed between the levels of serum IgA and the percentages of Bα cells. The addition of aggregated IgA to cultures did not induce FcαR-bearing B cells in vitro. It is postulated that Bα cells might have some pathogenetic role in the development of IgA nephropathy and that some antigenic stimuli might play a role in the increase of peripheral blood Bα cells in patients with IgA nephropathy.

Notes: A case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the left palatal tonsil in a 51-year-old woman is reported. The histological features of the tumor are typical, except for the appearance of crystal inclusions in plasma cells, histiocytes and matrices. The developmental process and the nature of the crystal inclusions are discussed, based on electron-microscopic findings. The patient has been followed for one year post-operatively, and no clinical evidence of recurrence has been observed.

Notes: Two cases of oral B-lymphomas with numerous Russell body-like inclusions arc described. One occurred primarily in the hard palate of a 59-year-old female with Sjogren's syndrome, and was diagnosed as lymphoplasmacytoid immunoeytoma by Kiel's classification. The other occurred secondarily in the buccal mucosa of a 44-year-old female whose first affected site was orbital soft tissues, and was diagnosed as extramedullary plasmacytoma. The diagnostic problems and the nature of the Russell body-like inclusions are discussed based on the immunoperoxidase (PAP) method and electron microscopic study. The first patient is well without recurrence 19 months after surgery, while the second patient developed extra-medullary plasmacytoma in the abdomen 5 months after surgery for the buccal plasmacytoma.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract The desorption of H2 from clean and CO-poisoned Pd wires was studied by a temperature programmed desorption technique. Poisoning effect of CO on H2 desorption process can be accounted for in terms of blockage of the surface sites for the recombination of H atoms.
