Notes: The effect of immunotherapy by intranasal insulflation a of Lolium perenne allergens modified with glutaraldehyde (Glu-Rye) was tested by a stratified placebo-controlled trial in 16 adult subjects with hay fever. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine whether the treatment could reduce nasal sensitivity to allergen in provocation tests. Modification of the allergen was shown to include polymerization and reduced allergenicity, but retained immunogenicity. Nasal sensitivity to unmodified L. perenne allergens was measured by threshold-type quantitative nasal challenge and posterior rhinometry for measurement of nasal airway resistance. In challenge tests after a 10-week course of intranasal preseasonal treatment with Glu-Rye, nasal sensitivity was reduced, but this effect was not maintained when testing was repeated 9 months after treatment. Post-seasonal serum levels of IgE antibodies to L. perenne were also not significantly affected by the treatment.

Notes: Summary Microangiographic serial cuts were performed in 20 Sprague-Dawley rats for a systematic study of the normal anatomy of the cerebral veins. The draining pathways of the cerebral and cerebellar cortex, basal ganglia, hypothalamus, hippocampus and the midbrain are described and discussed with regard to their different functions.

Notes: Summary The spatial situation of the cervical spine has been studied under endoscopic and CT-scanning conditions. The effects of ventro- and dorsoflexial movements upon the width of the epidural and subdural space have been noted, and their significance concerning the positioning of the injureds cervical spine has been discussed. The most spacegiving position of the cervical spine is a slight ventroflexion, which is therefore considered the best cervical spine position in case of space requiring alterations of the cervical spine.

Notes: Abstract A resonance fluorescence self-absorption experiment has been carried out for the 1,434 MeV first excited state in52Cr, using gaseous52MnI2 as source for the exciting gamma radiation. TheB(E2,0 1 + →2 1 + )=(687±13)e 2 fm4 is in agreement with the most recent Coulomb excitation and inelastic electron scattering experiments yielding (660±30)e 2 fm4 and (634±39)e 2 fm4, respectively, and disagrees with former electron scattering experiments.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence spectra contain information on the slowing-down behaviour of recoiling atoms in the energy range pertinent to the specific reaction. On the basis of conventional transport theory, measured spectra for arsenic atoms with energies ≲15 eV slowing down in helium are analysed. The assumption of continuous slowing down turns out to be well justified, and the thermal motion of the gas atoms is shown to influence the effective stopping power only slightly. Somewhat surprising in view of uncertainties concerning the charge state of the recoiling atoms, theoretical predictions based on Lenz-Jensen elastic interaction agree well with the measured spectra. At present, the experimental data do not allow direct inversion, but the calculated spectra are shown to depend sensitively on the stopping-power input.

Notes: Abstract The time dependence of the recoil velocity of a140Ce nucleus in a La and a LaF3 lattice after β emission is studied via the Doppler shift of the 1.596 MeV γ transition in140Ce. Evidence is obtained that the nucleus does not leave the lattice site even at a recoil energy of about 20 eV but carries out a damped oscillation. The quantitative comparison of the recoil velocity with the predictions of lattice theory leads to partial agreement.

Notes: Abstract Using56Co sources, a 3.254 MeV level in238U was photoexcited by aγ-line emitted in the decay of the 4.100 MeV level in56Fe. 10γ-transitions deexciting this 3.254 MeV level were identified. Spin and parity were determined to be 1−. By moving the56Co source in a high speed centrifuge the profile of the 3.254 MeV emission line was investigated. By applying a new variety of Doppler shift analysis a lifetime ofτ Fe=55±25fs was obtained for the 4.100 MeV level in56Fe. The cross section for nuclear resonance fluorescence yields a lifetime ofτ U =0.33±0.12 ps for the 3.254 MeV level in238U.

Notes: Abstract Using gaseous60CoI2 sources, the velocity distribution of60Ni nuclei afterβ-decay of60Co has been measured by the nuclear-resonance-fluorescence coincidence (NRFC) method. By comparison with model calculations, information is obtained on the rearrangement of electrons on the molecule as a consequence of the change of nuclear charge. In 42% of the rearrangement processes bound (NiI2)+ or (NiI)+ molecule ions are formed. In 24% the molecule is singly charged but with the bonds between Ni and its molecular partners ruptured. In 34% the charging of more than one molecular partner leads to Coulomb explosion of the molecule. The probability of finding more than one charge on the molecule is larger by a factor of 2 as compared to the probability for electron shake-off on an isolated Ni atom.

Notes: Abstract Elastic scattering by nuclei in the range of mass numbers between 64 and 238 has been studied with monochromatic photons in the energy range between 2 and 8 MeV. These photons were provided either by a Ti(n,γ) source installed in the tangential through channel of the Grenoble high flux reactor, or by24Na and56Co sources produced by deuteron bombardment of Al or Fe at the Göttingen cyclotron. The photoexcitation of 23 nuclear levels has been observed and the decay properties and groundstate widths of the majority of these levels have been determined. For the lead scattering target the coherent elastic differential cross section has been studied in detail. There is evidence that below the photo-neutron threshold the elastic scattering via virtual photoexcitation of the nucleus can be approximated by extrapolating the real part of the Giant Dipole Resonance amplitude along a Lorentzian curve. Coulomb corrections to Delbrück scattering seem to play a small role at 6.5 MeV.

Notes: Abstract Using the181Ta(n, γ) and141Pr(n, γ) reactions to provide a dense series of intenseγ-rays, photoexcitation of the238U nucleus has been studied in the 4–7 MeV range. It is shown that most of the effective cross sections are in line with an average strength function as given by the GDR Lorentzian line superimposed by Porter-Thomas fluctuations. Resonances of nonstatistical strength are found close to 5.2 MeV.
