Notes: Abstract A kinetic energy budget over the Indian region is computed for the period 4–9 July 1973, when a twin monsoon depression-one in the Bay of Bengal and another in the Arabian sea were the dominant synoptic features. The generation term caused by the cross-contour flow is a dominant source to the kinetic energy. The dissipation term is computed as a residual and is a major sink for the kinetic energy. The horizontal flux divergence is also a sink term but is much smaller in magnitude than other major source and sink terms. From the results it may be inferred that the generation term is the most important for the maintenance of monsoon disturbances.

Notes: Summary Analytic expressions for the far-field displacement both in the time and the frequency domains are obtained for the kinematic earthquake model of a rupture which nucleates at a point, grows in the form of a rectangle and stops at a later time. The spectra ofS andP waves are analyzed with the object of determining fault dimensions from the corner frequencies. The approach by which the solution of the present problem is obtained can be extended to get closed form solutions to the problem of rupture front expanding in the form of a polygon and terminating over a fault area which has the form of another polygon.

Notes: Bright-field lattice images of three syntactically coalesced polytypes of SiC were taken with a view to deriving structural information. A high-period structure 400H is found to consist of seven unit cells of 150R and one unit cell of 150RA. The 150R structure is built up of ten 15R unit cells; consecutive 15R subunits in obverse and reverse orientation give rise to sudden changes in contrast in the image. Complete structure determination of 150R and 150RA is thus possible. The structures were confirmed by comparing the calculated and observed X-ray intensities. An imaging code was established which helped in the structure determination of the 400H polytype.

Notes: Diffuse X-ray intensities have been measured in the hk0 reciprocal plane of cubic dicalcium barium propionate, Ca2Ba(C2H5COO)6, with a diffractometer. The observed streaks run parallel to [\bar 110], passing through reciprocal-lattice points with h + k = 8n. Intensity profiles in two directions perpendicular to the streaks were measured and fitted theoretically under the assumption of one-dimensional Markov-chain-type correlations; the agreement between theory and experimental data is excellent, particularly for the [110] direction, giving correlation lengths of 24.5 (5) Å along [110] and 4.6 (1) Å along [001]. These lengths are compared with the crystal structure and suggest a model in which there are ordered domains elongated along [110] but rather short along [001].

Notes: Disease severity, based on six parameters (time from inoculation to flecking, and eruption of uredinia, uredinial density and the amounts of urediniospoies produced), was assessed on leaf discs cut from four cultivars of Populus spp. raised with either a long (15 h) or a short (10 h) photoperiod. The discs were inoculated with race 4 of Melampsora medusae and subsequently incubated with either a long (15 h) or a short (10 h) photoperiod. While disease severity, based on most parameters, was lower in discs from the continuing long photoperiod (15 h pre- and 15 h post-inoculation) than from the continuing short photoperiod (10 h pre- and 10 h post-inoculation), maximum severity was developed by discs given a combination of a short pre- and a long post-inoculation photoperiod. The relative contribution of the cultivar, the pre- and the post-inoculation photoperiod and their second- and third-order interactions to variation in disease severity depended on the parameter employed to assess severity. The parameters used are elements of disease monocycles and their possible significance in modelling epidemics is discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper is an analytical study on the pulse wave velocities in the aorta. In conformity to a physiologic state of loading, the distensibility of the vessel wall has been accounted for. The wall material is treated by using the theory of large elastic deformations. The orthotropicity of wall tissues and the effect of the surrounding tissues have been incorporated in the analysis which is based on the use of the strain energy function suggested by Vaishnavet al. Numerical values of the wave velocities of the canine middle descending thoracic aorta are computed by using the derived analytical expressions.

Notes: Summary Persistence in daily rainfall occurrence during the peak summer monsoon months of July–August has been studied for 22 stations, widely spread over the country. The logarithmic, Markov chain order 1 and 2 and modified logarithmic models are fitted to the runs of wet and dry days to examine the nature of persistence and the fitness tested byX 2 tests. Markov chain order 2 (modified logarithmic model) fits to the runs of dry spells (wet spells) better than the other models. The logarithmic model is found to be a poor fit for both types of spells. Persistence in daily and 5-day precipitation amounts and in daily expected areal coverage of precipitation is examined by computing auto-correlation coefficients for various lags. Persistence in 5-day precipitation amount and in 5-day expected areal coverage of precipitation is also examined by constructing 3 × 3 contingency tables. All these results show that persistence is more prominently exhibited in certain parts of central and western India.

Notes: Abstract The use of flow directed Swan Ganz catheters has provided an additional dimension in improving patient care in the intensive care units. We undertook repeated Swan Ganz catheterization in 26 patients with congestive cardiac failure on 65 occasions to evaluate the effect of vasodilator drugs. The same internal jugular vein was used. No significant complications were noted.

Notes: Summary Paraoxon and methyl-parathion (Wofatox), frequently used organophosphate pesticides, were tested for cytogenetic effects in lymphocytes of persons with different phenotypes of paraoxonase activity. Sister chromatid exchanges (SCE), chromosome breaks, and cell cycle traverse were studied in ten individuals. Paraoxon showed no significant effects whereas methylparathion showed a dose-dependent increase in the SCE and a definite delay in the cell cycle as assessed by fluorescence plus Giemsa technique. No significant clastogenic effects and no difference in response were observed among individuals with different phenotypes of paraoxonase.
