    Notes: Abstract The use of flow directed Swan Ganz catheters has provided an additional dimension in improving patient care in the intensive care units. We undertook repeated Swan Ganz catheterization in 26 patients with congestive cardiac failure on 65 occasions to evaluate the effect of vasodilator drugs. The same internal jugular vein was used. No significant complications were noted.

    Notes: Summary over 13000 CIAT bean accessions were evaluated for their reactions to the anthracnose (Colletotrichum lindemuthianum) and angular leaf spot (Isariopsis griseola) pathogens over a 3 yr period. Among these accessions, 156 were resistant to all races of the anthracnose pathogen collected from Popayán, Colombia. Thirty were resistant to numerous races obtained from other parts of the world, including Europe. Although many of these new resistant sources originated in Mexico and Central America, they are quite diverse for geographic origin, plant type, seed color and seed size. In addition, more than 50 of the 156 lines were also resistant to isolates of I. griseola with diverse sources of origin throughout Colombia.

    Notes: Summary The effect of N and Zn on the yield of submerged rice and uptake of N and Zn was studied on limed and unlimed soils in greenhouse. Nitrogen was applied at the rate of 0,80 and 160 ppm through urea, ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate, Zn at 0 and 10 ppm in limed (4% CaCO3) and unlimed soils. Liming (4% CaCO3) decreased dry matter yield of rice at tillering, heading and straw and grain at maturity significantly against unlimed treatments. Ammonium sulphate gave highest yield with all applied doses followed by ammonium nitrate and urea. Zinc at 10 ppm increased dry matter and grain yield significantly over no Zn treatment in rice. The N sources gave N concentration and uptake in rice plants in decreasing order: $$Ammonium sulphate 〉 Ammonium nitrate 〉 Urea.$$ The highest N concentration was recorded with 160 ppm followed by 80 ppm N through any source and lowest in control. The application of Zn increased and liming decreased N concentration and uptake by rice at all sampling stages. Highest N concentration (2.37 to 3.92%) was observed at tillering followed at heading (0.48 to 1.05%). At maturity N in grain ranged from 0.69 to 1.13% whereas in straw from 0.24 to 0.41%. There were positive significant interactions of N(S) x N(L), N(S) and N(L) x Zn and negative interaction with lime on yield, N concentration (%) and N uptake (mg/pot). The application of N sources and levels and Zn increased Zn uptake (μg/pot), and liming decreased it. But 160 ppm N through any source decreased straw Zn concentration over 80 ppm N in absence of added Zn, however, effects on grain were not so strong particularly that of 160 ppm, when 10 ppm Zn was also added even 160 ppm N increased Zn concentration over 80 ppm significantly in both straw and grain. In this case the effect of N sources on Zn concentration was in the order: $$Ammonium sulphate 〉 Urea 〉 Ammonium nitrate.$$

    Notes: Abstract The effects of CaCO3, Zn sources and levels on the yield of submerged paddy and uptake of Zn, P and N to paddy were studied in green-house at Haryana Agricultural University, Hissar. Powdered CaCO3 was mixed at 0,4 and 8 per cent and Zn was added at 0,5 and 10 ppm through ZnSO4.7H2O, ZnO and Zn EDTA separately. Dry weight at tillering and heading and grain and straw at maturity decreased significantly with 4 and 8 per cent CaCO3 in comparison to the control. Increasing Zn application increased the dry weight and grain yield. Zn EDTA gave highest yield of paddy followed by ZnSO4.7H2O and ZnO. Increasing the application of CaCO3 from 0–8 per cent decreased the concentration and uptake of Zn and increasing Zn application from 0–10 ppm increased concentration and uptake of Zn in paddy at tillering, heading and maturity. Zn EDTA gave the highest concentration and uptake of Zn followed by ZnSO4.7H2O and ZnO. There was interaction between Zn sources and CaCO3. The concentration and uptake of N and P in paddy dry matter at tillering and heading and straw and grain at maturity decreased as compared to control with increasing CaCO3 addition. The concentration and uptake of N increased and that of P decreased in paddy dry matter straw and grain with increasing Zn application. The highest concentration of N was observed with ZnO, followed by ZnSO4.7H2O and Zn EDTA. But highest uptake of N was observed with Zn EDTA followed by ZnSO4.7H2O and ZnO. As regards concentration and uptake of P, it was highest with ZnO followed by ZnSO4.7H2O and Zn EDTA.

    Notes: Abstract Bulbochaete allahabadensis sp. nov. is described from a temporary pond at Allahabad. Most of its life-cycle stages have been observed. It differs from other known species of the genus Bulbochaete in having characteristic oospores and interesting behaviour of androspores. Andropores after liberation from normal vegetative cells may germinate anywhere and form dwarf males or produce several celled branched germlings with precocious formation of antheridia. Such zoospore-like behaviour of androspores confirms the observations made by other workers under culture conditions.

    Notes: Summary Cadmium-resistant strains of the cyanobacterium Nostoc calcicola were isolated through the step-wise transfer of the organism to higher levels of the metal. One of the Cd-resistant strains (Cdr−10) showed cross-resistance to antibiotics like neomycin (1 μg/ml), chloramphenicol (3 μg/ml) but not to streptomycin. The Cd-resistant strain also tolerated elevated levels of metals such as zinc (20 ppm) and mercury (1 ppm). The stability of the metal-resistance required the presence of Cd2+ ions in the growth medium. It is suggested that metal resistance may also be determined by gene(s) on the antibiotic resistance plasmids in cyanobacteria.
