Notes: Summary 3H-levonorgestrel, a protein progestational steroid, showed a high affinity saturable binding to monkey plasma. Competitive protein binding experiments suggested that the levonorgestrel binds to a protein which resembles sex hormone-binding globulin.

Notes: Summary Centchroman, a non-steroidal antifertility agent showed a low affinity (Kd=13.19×10−6 M) and nonsaturable binding to human plasma. Centchroman did not complete either with sex hormone binding globulin or corticosteroid binding globulin. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and temperature dependent binding characteristics revealed that the protein responsible for centchroman binding to human plasma resembles albumin.

Notes: Summary An experimental study of ultrasonic absorption and velocity has been made in the cholesteric liquid crystals, viz. cholesteryl stearate, cholesteryl laurate and cholesteryl propionate, as a function of temperature, especially near the transition temperature. The absorption has been measured by using the pulse technique and the velocity with the help of an acoustic interferometer both at the single frequency of 2 MHz. The temperature has been controlled to within ±0.2°C with the help of an ultrathermostat. Abrupt increase in absorption and decrease in velocity have been observed beyond the isotropic-cholesteric transition temperature and the results are discussed qualitatively.

Notes: Summary The water status and nitrogen metabolism of the groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) cultivars, M-13 and M-145 were examined during a period of water stress and recovery. 10 day old seedlings, grown in controlled environment were exposed to solutions of polyethylene glycol (MW 6000, osmotic potential, −0.5 or −0.8 MPa = −5 or −8 bars) for a week when the stress was relieved by replacing the PEG solution with a nutrient solution. Relative turgidity, total protein and free amino acid concentration and nitrate reductase activity were measured during the period of stress and recovery. Cultivar M-13, despite its lower relative turgidity during stress, was better able to preserve its protein concentration and nitrate reductase activity, and recover to a normal state within three days of the relief of stress. M-145, on the other hand, failed to recover within this period. The results are discussed in the light of the known performance of the two cultivars in the field under drought conditions.

Notes: Abstract Twenty four fungi were isolated from ear wax or otitis media of agricultural field workers, of which 18 are being reported for the first time from India. Direct observation, revealed the presence of hyphal fragments, spores of Alternaria, Bipolaris, conidial head of Aspergillus, smut teliospores and pollen. Spores of only four fungi, Alternaria humicola, Aspergillus niveus, Bipolaris spicifera and Fusarium moniliforme germinated in otitis media at 37 ° C, and their germination was affected by relative humidity. Alternaria humicola and Aspergillus niveus appeared to be the causative agents of otomycosis, and otitis media is fungistatic in nature.

Notes: Abstract Cumulative yields of the short lived105Ru,107–109Ru isotopes in the spontaneous fission of252Cf have been determined by a fast radiochemical separation followed by gamma spectrometry. The cumulative yields of105Ru,107Ru,108Ru and109Ru are 7.20 ±0.30, 6.35±0.35, 5.89±0.29 and 4.08±0.30 respectively. The value of109Ru has been determined for the first time. From the cumulative yields the chain yields for mass chains 105, 107, 108 and 109 are obtained.
