Notes: Summary Heated albumin microspheres with an average diameter of 45±8 μm and containing mitomycin C, released, in vitro, about 20% of this antibiotic over a 3-day period. VX-2 tumors were implanted into the hind leg of rabbits and the drug-containing microspheres were injected into the femoral artery of these animals. High levels of the drug were maintained for several hours in the tumor and growth of the tumor was inhibited considerably, compared to findings in control rabbits given the conventional mitomycin C. Half the number of the rabbits treated with our new method are alive with no evidence of tumor.

Notes: Summary The topographic distribution and organization of visual neurons in the prefrontal cortex was examined in alert monkeys. The animal was trained to fixate straight ahead onto a tinty, dim light spot. While he was fixating, we presented a stationary second light spot (RF spot) at various locations in the visual field and examined unit responses of the prefrontal neurons to the RF-spot stimulus. Many prefrontal neurons, especially those located in the relatively superficial layers of the cortex, responded with a phasic and/or tonic activation to the RF spot illuminating a limited extent of the visual field, a receptive field (RF) being so determined. The visual neurons were found to be widely distributed in the prearcuate and inferior dorsolateral areas. One hemisphere mainly represented the contralateral visual field. According to the location of the neurons in these areas, their visual properties varied with respect to RF eccentricity from the fovea and in size. The neurons located in the lateral part of the areas and close to the inferior arcuate sulcus had relatively small RFs representing the foveal and parafoveal regions. When the recording site was moved medially, the RFs became eccentric from the fovea and were larger. Then, the neurons located between the caudal end of the principal sulcus and the arcuate sulcus had RFs with a considerable eccentricity. The size of the RF became progressively larger for anteriorly located neurons and this occurred generally without a change in RF eccentricity. The visual neurons were not organized on a regular pattern in the cortex with regard to their RF direction (vector angle) from the foveal region. From these observations, we conclude, first, that the prearcuate and inferior dorsolateral areas of the prefrontal cortex are functionally differentiated so that the lateral area's function is related to central vision, while that of the medial area to ambient vision. Second, the RF representation on the cortex with loss of the vector relation may generate an interaction between separate objects in visual space and may subserve the control of attention performance.

Notes: Abstract A case of Letterer-Siwe disease in a thirteen-month-old girl with markedly swollen gums, an enlarged liver, and seborrhoic skin eruptions is reported. She died from pyopneumothorax in spite of treatment with prednisolone and vinblastine. Analysis of hepatic lipids showed that there was remarkable increase in free fatty acid, which is not seen in normal human liver. Cholesterol ester was also accumulated in the liver tissue. However, the concentrations of phospholipids and glycerides were low and lysophospholipid was found. It is assumed that there was increased intracellular lipolysis in the proliferating reticuloendothelial cells.

Notes: The short-range-order (SRO) parameters of disordered Au4Mn alloy were determined from an analysis of the X-ray diffuse scattering with the use of Borie & Sparks [Acta Cryst. (1971), A27, 198-201] separation techniques. On the basis of the observed SRO parameters the local Mn atom arrangement in the f.c.c. lattice was constructed using a computer simulation method. The Mn atoms in the SRO state were found to form a three-dimensional irregular network which is linked mainly by linear chain segments along the [100] directions and also with nearest-neighbour relations. The Mn atom arrangement is the first example to show the structure expected from a random spin system with a concentration gradient. The ferromagnetic properties of this state can be well understood on the basis of the structure.

Notes: A case of rudimentary polydactyly (cutaneous neuroma) on the ulnar aspect of the left fifth finger of a 38-year-old male was examined and the skin was studied by light and electron microscopy. In addition to a proliferation of nerve fibers and encapsulated corpuscles, normal Merkel cells were often present in the basal portion of the epidermis. It is suggested that proliferation of various neural components is the essential feature of the affected skin.

Notes: Two cases of congenital onychoheterotopia (ectopic nail) are described. In the first case electron microscopy showed spherical keratohyalin granules, and cytoplasmic desmosomes were seen in the keratinocytes of the nail matrix. The ectopic nail differed from the normal nail in the widening of the angle between the nail matrix and proximal nail fold, and in its radial growth to the skin surface. In the second case, clippings of the ectopic nail were taken and their hardness proved to be very similar to that of normal nails.

Notes: The attachment of ticks to human skin has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. Intact specimens of Ixodes ovatus and Ixodes persulcatus were examined, and we also studied the skin of two patients who had been bitten by these two species. In the first case, the remains of the tick were visible and a homogeneous cement-like substance was observed on the dorsal hypostome and in the dermis, suggesting that the tick attaches itself to the host skin by a secretion. In the second case, the apices of some denticles of the hypostome were chipped. Two months later, the skin which the tick had attacked was biopsied and yellowish-brown particles, probably derived from the denticles, were seen in foreign body giant cells in the dermis.

Notes: Summary Human rotavirus “KUN” strain was cultivated in a fetal rhesus monkey kidney cell line, MA 104 cells. Four types of virus particles in cells infected with KUN strain were clearly identified: nucleoid cores, single-shelled particles, double-shelled particles, and membrane band, “enveloped” particles. “Enveloped” particles were found only in the thin sections of infected cells. When first visible, the virus precursors appeared at the ribosome free membrane of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), increasing in size while simultaneously being coated with nucleocapsid, inner shell. Single-shelled particles were also synthesized within bundles of filaments of viroplasm in the cytoplasma. During subsequent virus maturation two types of “budding” processes were observed. Double-shelled particles arising at the RER membrane entered the cisternae of the RER through an exocytosis-like process. In contrast, the “enveloped” particles developed in the cisternae by being completely enclosed with RER membrane, and later during cytolysis released the single-shelled particles. These “enveloped” virus particles appeared to be the result of inefficient virus maturation at the last stage of outer capsid formation.

Notes: Summary In the presence of tunicamycin, decreases in the number of double-shelled human rotavirus particles coincided with a reduction in cell lysates infectivity. The majority of particles within the endoplasmic reticulum were membrane bound, “enveloped” particles.
