Summary This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of perfusion on the survival of free flaps transferred by microvascular anastomoses. Special attention was paid to a possible damage of the arterial stump caused by the insertion of a blunt needle for perfusion. 109 free flaps were elevated on the dorsum of the ears of 59 rabbits. We found that perfusion itself does not produce any harmful effect on the survival of the flap if the arterial end, where the initial damage is most likely to have occurred following needle insertion, was sectioned to secure an intact artery for microvascular anastomosis. Concentration of heparin solution neither affected the flap survival in the perfusion group nor in the non-perfusion group.
