Notes: Summary Clone MC3T3-E1 cells isolated from newborn mouse calvaria had the same type of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) as that found in adult mouse calvaria (the liver-bone-kidney type), as judged by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis as well as by heat lability and amino acid inactivation. The effects of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), parathyroid hormone (PTH), 1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D3], and adenosine-3′, 5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) analogs on ALP were investigated. PGE2 and 1,25(OH)2D3 increased ALP activity in dose-related manner with a maximal effect at concentrations of 10 ng/ml and 40 pg/ml, respectively. N6,O2-dibutyryl adenosine-3′, 5′-cyclic monophosphate (DBcAMP) also induced an increase in ALP activity in a dose-related fashion with a maximal effect at a concentration of 0.5 mM which was 2.2-fold over that of the controls. Induced ALP was of the “liver-bone-kidney” type. Antinomycin D and cycloheximide inhibited the increase in ALP activity induced by DBcAMP. The level of ALP was elevated by 8-bromo-adenosine-3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate and theophylline, but not by N6,O2-dibutyryl guanosine-3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate and sodium butyrate. Moreover, PGE2 dramatically increased the level of cAMP in the cells with a maximal effect at a concentration of 10 ng/ml, indicating that PGE2 and DBcAMP induce an increase of ALP activity in clone MC3T3-E1 cells by increasing the cAMP level; PTH did not affect enzyme activity and cAMP, level in the cells. These results suggest that PGE2, DBcAMP, and 1,25(OH)2D3 are involved in bone formationin vivo as well.

Notes: Abstract Superconductivity properties of the BaPb1−x Bi x O3 system have been investigated by precise measurements of electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient in specimens prepared by the hot press technique. Sharp superconducting transitions have been observed in those specimens, indicating the homogeneities of the specimens thus prepared. superconductivity has been observed for 0.05〈x≦0.35 and a maximum critical temperature of 11.7 K has been observed atx=0.25. The carrier concentration deduced from the Hall coefficient has been found to show nearly the samex dependence as does the critical temperature. The upper critical field has been determined from the magnetic field dependence of the lowcurrent-density resistivity. Discussions are given about the superconductivity in the BaPb1−x Bi x O3 system on the basis of the experiment results.

Notes: Summary After a monocular injection of [3H]amino acid into the vitreous chamber of the eye, the distribution of retinal terminations in the pulvinar nucleus of the crab-eating monkey and pigtail macaque was studied by autoradiography. Two groups of labeled terminals were found in the bilateral inferior pulvinar nuclei: one small, dense group was located in the most rostral part of the nuclei and the other, composed of a few small clusters of the labeled terminals, was observed over the medial zone of the middle portion. The terminals were slightly predominant in the contralateral nucleus. A small amount of silver grains showing labeled retinofugal fibers was found in the dorsal surface of the thalamus just medial to the stria terminalis contralateral to the injected site, but termination of these fibers could not be traced in this study.

Notes: Summary Using our previously published “incomplete cerebral hemispheric infarction model in dogs” (produced by simultaneous ipsilateral occlusions of the anterior cerebral artery at the branching of the ethmoidal artery from its A1 portion, the A2 portion, the internal carotid artery, the posterior communicating artery, the posterior cerebral artery, and the anterior cerebellar artery), two, four, or six hours occlusion of blood flow was undertaken. Observations were then made on the degree of brain swelling following recirculation due to administration of mannitol or glycerol solutions. Furthermore, the leakage of Evans blue was investigated to determine the damage to the blood brain barrier. 1. In the animals given mannitol or glycerol, brain swelling was suppressed, following two hours occlusion. In the animals given mannitol, however, brain swelling was not suppressed after four or six hours occlusion. 2. After two hours occlusion in the animals given mannitol, leakage of Evans blue was slight compared with the untreated group. In the six hours occlusion groups, severe leakage of Evans blue was seen in both the untreated animals and the mannitol-treated animals. After two hours occlusion, in some animals which had been given glycerol, severe leakage of Evans blue was seen, even when there was little brain swelling.

Notes: Summary Using the incomplete cerebral hemisphere infarction in dogs, we have been able to produce brain swelling in all animals after six hours of vascular occlusion followed by recirculation of blood. The current study tested the effects of mannitol, perfluorochemicals (FC), and inhalation of oxygen in various combinations on such brain swelling. 1. Mannitol alone, FC alone, and FC together with oxygen were ineffective. Mannitol together with oxygen was to some extent effective in suppressing brain swelling. 2. Mannitol followed by FC was effective in suppressing brain swelling, and this effectiveness was further enhanced by inhalation of oxygen. 3. Noteworthy is the fact that among these experimental groups, there were animals in which brain swelling was severe, yet extravasation of Evans blue was slight and, contrarily, animals in which brain swelling was slight but extravasation severe.

Notes: Abstract Sera obtained from patients with syphilis were subjected to gel filtration chromatography to estimate antibody activity in the fractions by means ofTreponema palludum immune adherence (TPIA) test. Antibody activity was found in IgM and IgG fractions and in the intermediate fraction between them. The TPIA activity of the intermediate fraction was depleted by an immunosorbent coupled with anti-μ chain antibody but not by that coupled with anti-α chain antibody. After separation by gel filtration and affinity chromatography, the fraction with the TPIA activity showed a positive precipitation reaction against anti-μ chain antiserum but a negative reaction with anti-α chain or anti-γ chain antiserum. The antibody activity in this fraction was thus confirmed to be mainly due to low molecular weight-IgM antibody. In untreated patients with primary and secondary syphilis, the TPIA activity was demonstrated with high frequency in the low molecular weight-IgM fraction and it decreased gradually after treatment, although lowered activity persisted over a long period of time. Late syphilis cases did not show any appreciable change in TPIA activity in this fraction even after treatment.

Notes: Abstract Energy distributions of H+ and H− backscattered from graphite, stainless steel and molybdenum were measured for low incident beam energies (150∼1500 eV). The energy distributions of H− resembled that of H+, while the intensity ratio of H− to H+ varied from material to material and with the incident proton energy. A peak in the energy distribution moved to the “cutoff” energy with decreasing incident energy, which can be attributed to an increase in nuclear stopping cross section and a decrease in electronic stopping cross section. The ratio of the peak energy to the incident energy is related to the reduced energy ɛ of incident beam independent of target materials in the measured region (0.03〈ɛ〈 3.3).

Notes: Abstract The thermal conductivity of ten liquid fluorocarbons, R 11, R 12, R 13, R 13B1, R 22, R 113, R 114, R 115, R 114B2, and R 124, was measured in the temperature range from 204–450 K by using the transient hot wire method. Prior to the measurement of the fluorocarbons, the thermal conductivity of toluene as the reference material was measured. The results for toluene agree with the recommended values by Nagasaka and Nagashima within ±1%. The accuracy of the present results for fluorocarbons is estimated to be better than ±1.5%. The results are compared with the equation by Li and Poole. The equation proves to be unsuitable for some fluorocarbons, and modified Li-Poole equations including the number of fluorine atoms are proposed for the three groups of fluorocarbons based on the smoothed values of this work and are compared with the experimental data.
