    Notes: Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is present in the fronds of Lemna gibba L. Differential centrifugation showed that ca. 90% of the enzyme is present in the 140,000 g soluble cell fraction. Lemna SOD is sensitive to cyanide and is probably a Cu-Zn metallo-protein. Gel filtration showed the SOD to have a mass of 31,000 daltons. In Zn-defizient culture media, the activity of Lemna SOD was less than in fronds grown in complete nutrient media whereas in Cu-deficient media little change was found in the enzyme activity. The SOD activity in Zn-deficient plants could be partly restored to the level of Zn-sufficient fronds by adding Zn2+ to the enzyme assay solution.

    Notes: The growth-promoting (benzyladenine) and growth-inhibiting (abscisic acid) plant hormones, when used at concentrations of 0.4 and 4.0 μM, affect the development of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of Lemna fronds in opposite ways, the former hormone decreasing the activity and the latter increasing it. The effect of both growth substances is on de novo synthesis of the enzyme. In addition abscisic acid also causes the Zn, Cu and protein contents of the fronds to increase, while benzyladenine has the opposite affect.

    Notes: The causes of cell wall necrosis in Blossom End Rot (BER) of tomatoes have been investigated by comparing enzyme activities in healthy and affected tissues in the cultivars Grenadier and Moneymaker. Changes in the mineral contents of the tomatoes were in accordance with those of calcium deficient tissues. The phenolic contents of the affected tissues were increased as also were caffeic and chlorogenic acids. Phenolase and peroxidase activities were higher in affected fruits white catalase activities were higher in healthy fruits. 14C-labelled leucine was incorporated into the proteins of the healthy fruits to the greatest extent but cell wall proteinbound hydroxyproline was greatest in affected fruits.

    Notes: Abstract We performed a quantitative assessment of the impact of impingement at power plants on the Hudson River white perch population We estimated that impingement reduces the abundance of each white perch year class by at least 10% and probably by 15–20% or more after 2–3 years of vulnerability to power plants We attempted to detect effects of impingement on average year-class abundance of white perch from a time series of abundance indices derived from impingement data We found, however, that neither impingement collection rates observed at Hudson River power plants nor beach seine data provide a reliable index of year-class strength in white perch. Even if a reliable index were developed, natural fluctuations in year-class strength are great enough that a short-term monitoring program would be inadequate for detecting even a large reduction in average year-class strength. We performed a multipopulation analysis using simple food chain and food web models The results suggest that any long-term decline in white perch abundance caused by impingement should be accompanied by an increase in the abundance of one or more competing fish species and by an increase in the biomass of adult white perch relative to young-of-the-year. We conclude that 1) at present, assessments of population-level impact of impingement should focus on short-term effects, 2) research is needed to develop a reliable index of year-class strength for use in long-term monitoring programs, 3) identification and quantification of natural environmental factors influencing year-class strength are needed to improve our ability to predict and detect changes in abundance, and 4) it would be useful in designing monitoring programs to focus on detecting patterns of change among populations and age groups rather than solely on declines in abundance of individual populations

    Notes: Abstract The ability to detect and to develop a precise and accurate estimate of the entrainment mortality fraction is an important step in projecting power plant impacts on future fish population levels. Recent work indicates that these mortailities may be considerably less than 100% for some fish species in the early life stages. Point estimates of the entrainment mortality fraction have been developed based on probabilistic arguments, but the precision of these estimates has not been studied beyond the simple statistical test of the null hypothesis that no entrainment mortaility exists. The ability to detect entrainment mortality is explored as a function of the sample sizes (numbers of organisms collected) at the intake and discharge sampling stations of a power plant and of the proportion of organisms found alive in the intake samples (intake survival). Minimum detectable entrainment mortality, confidence interval width, and type II error (probability of accepting the null hypothesis of no entrainment mortality when there is mortality) are considered. Increasing sample size and/or decreasing sampling mortality will decrease the minimum detectable entrainment mortality, confidence interval width, and type II error for a given level of type I error. The results of this study are considered in the context of designing useful monitoring programs for determining the entrainment mortality fraction. Preliminary estimates of intake survival and the entrainment mortality fraction can be used to obtain estimates of the sample size needed for a specified level of confidence interval width or type II error. Final estimates of the intake survival and the entrainment mortality fraction can be used to determine the minimum detectable entrainment mortality and the type II error.

    Notes: Abstract Quantitative molecular orbital (MO) calculations and qualitative perturbational MO arguments are used to interpret the spectra and structure of transition metal dichalcogenides and related compounds. Competition between pyrite (FeS2), marcasite (FeS2) and loellingite (FeAs2) structure types is explained in terms of the number of electrons occupying a set of MO's obtained from the mixing of dianion (A 2) orbitals and metal (M) dσ orbitals. Direct metal-metal d orbital interaction is argued to be small. Attention is focused upon the M - A - M angles which differ substantially among the three structure types as a consequence of varying numbers of electrons in orbitals which closely resemble the pπ* orbitals of the dianions. Variations in M - A and A - A distances can also be understood in terms of the occupations of this set of MO's. Disulfide valence region photo-emission spectra are interpreted in terms of calculations on MS6 and S6 molecular clusters. M3d orbitals are found to progressively approach the S3p orbitals with increasing atomic number of M from Fe to Ni. For CuS2 comparison of calculation and experiment supports an approximate electron configuration of Cu+1 S 2 −1 .
