Notes: Summary Three cases with unusual complications of shunting procedures are reported. These were migration of the peritoneal catheter into the mediastinum following an operation for a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt, extrusion of the peritoneal catheter through a well-healed abdominal incision in an adult following a VP shunt operation, and migration of the subdural catheter into the brain substance causing increased intracranial pressure following a subduroperitoneal shunt operation. The possible mechanisms leading to the two migrations and the extrusion are discussed.

Notes: Summary A Stereotactic method to visualize deep subcortical structures through which the electrode would pass intraoperatively is described in detail. The procedures are: 1) Approximation of the tentative target point in the lateral craniogram according to some craniometric data. 2) Determination of the invading route and its transfer to the patient's scalp. 3) CT scanning by a new generation scanner to distinguish between gray and white matter along the predetermined plane. 4) Intraoperative adjustment of the electrode to the predetermined CT image and error correction. 5) Verification by recording electrical activities in subcortical tissue. This simple method would be of great benefit for the accurate and safe performance of Stereotactic thalamotomy and biopsy.

Notes: Abstract Amphipathic antigen (AcA) was extracted with phenol solution from whole cells of Actinomyces viscosus, and purified by gel filtration on Sepharose 6B. From the results of the gel diffusion test and passive hemagglutination assay, AcA was shown to be present as the cell-surface antigen.

Notes: The expression of human placental cell surface antigens was examined in cells of lymphoid origin, including peripheral blood lymphocytes and cultured lymphoblastoid cells of bone marrow or thymus derivation. A select group of this. defined set of surface antigens was detected on all three cell preparations. The most remarkable observation was the conspicuous absence of three subunits previously demonstrated to be present on all human cell surfaces examined to date. Antiserum directed against several placental components prevents adhesion and spreading of cell which grow attached to surfaces. These results suggest a role for these three glycoproteins in mediating cellular adhesion.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 2-(2-Thiazolylazo)-4-methyl-5-(sulfoethylamino)benzoesäure (TAMSEB) und 2-(2-Thiazolylazo)-4-methyl-5-(sulfopropylamino)benzoesäure (TAMSPB) wurden synthetisiert.
Notes: Summary 2-(2-Thiazolylazo)-4-methyl-5-(sulfoethylamino)benzoic acid (TAMSEB) and 2-(2-thioazolylazo)-4-methyl-5-(sulfopropylamino)-benzoic acid (TAMSPB) were synthesized. The acidity constants of these reagents and the formation constants of the copper(II) and nickel complexes were determined, and the effects of the length of sulfoalkyl groups on the properties as analytical reagent are discussed by comparing with those of 2-(2-thiazolylazo)-4-methyl-5-(sulfomethylamino) benzoic acid (TAMSMB). The sensitivity is high in the order of TAMSPB, TAMSEB and TAMSMB. The molar absorptivity of copper(II)-TAMSPB chelate is 58000 l mol−1cm−1. The spectrophotometric determination of copper (II) (25 ppb-25ppm) with a flow-injection system is described. Copper in Normal Control Serum was determined.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein Verfahren zur Kobaltbestimmung in Stahl mit TAMSMB wurde vorgeschlagen.
Notes: Summary A method for the determination of cobalt in steel with 2-(2-thi-azolylazo)-4-methyl-5-(sulfomethylamino) benzoic acid (TAMSMB) is proposed. Iron and manganese were previously removed by the extraction from 7M HCl into methyl isobutyl ketone and with an anion exchange column (Diaion SA # 100), respectively. The results of the analyses of steel samples were in good agreement with those by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. This method was compared with the methods using the highly sensitive reagents for cobalt; 4-(5-chloro-2-pyridylazo)-1,3-diaminobenzene(5-Cl-PADAB), 5-(3,5-dibromo-2-pyridylazo)-2,4-diaminotoluene (3,5-diBr-PADAT), 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(diethylamino) phenol(5-Br-PADAP), 2-(2-py-ridylazo)-4-methyl-5-(ethylamino) phenol (EAPAC), 2-(3,5-dibromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(dimethylamino) benzoic acid (3,5-di-Br-PAMB), 3-(2-thiazolylazo)-2,6-diaminotoluene (2,6-TADAT), and 2-nitroso-5-dimethylaminophenol (Nitroso-DMAP).

Notes: Summary The chromatographic separation mechanism on a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) column in aqueous systems was explored utilizing several different types of compound such as polyethylene glycols, carbohydrates, pyrimidine and purine bases, fatty acids, monophosphate nucleotides and glycyl-peptides. Two types of separation mechanisms were found to occur for these substrates. The polyethylene glycols and the carbohydrates were eluted by size-exclusion chromatography. The retention behavior of the other substrates could be explained by the solvophobic theory, suggesting that the predominant separation mode was reversed-phase chromatography. The occurrence of reversed-phase chromatography was also indicated by the remarkable effect of the addition of ion-association reagents to the chromatographic system on the retention of the monophosphate nucleotides.
