Notes: Methods were studied to extract soybean proteins from commercial defatted flakes with ultrasonic energy, continuously and efficiently, in a pilot plant. Studies also included batchwise sonication of aqueous soybean slurries in a tank. Parameters investigated included soybean-to-solvent ratios of 1:10, 1:20, and 1:30; solvents of tap water and 0.1N NaOH; and extraction with and without sonication. Protein yield and energy requirements for extraction were measured to correlate the operating condition with the extent of protein extraction. For a residence time of 0.7 sec in the continuous sonication process, the extracted protein yield was greatest at 1:30 soy-to-alkaline solvent ratio. Energy input to produce protein isolate is the least at 1:10 soy-to-alkaline solvent. Although the continuous sonication procedure is workable, the commercial operation remains to be tested.

Notes: Abstract To further investigate the limiting effect of substrates on maximum thermogenesis in acute cold exposure, the present study examined the prevalence of this effect at different thermogenic capabilities consequent to cold- or warm-acclimation. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=11) were acclimated to 6, 16 and 26

Notes: The differential orientation of polymer chains has been measured in polystyrene (PS)/poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) compatible blends. Density measurements are reported as a function of binary blend composition at 23°C. Drawing was performed by solid-state coextrusion. PS/PPO blend compositions of 90/10 and 75/25 were drawn within sandwiches of polyethylene at 145°C and isotactic polypropylene at 155°C, i.e. at ca. 25°C above the glass transition temperatures of the two blends. The change in Fourier-transform infrared dichroisms on drawing these blends was measured at 906 and 1190 cm-1, corresponding to predominantly PS and PPO, respectively. The orientation of PS and PPO was observed as a function of draw ratio λ in the range 1-5; orientations increased with λ for both PS and PPO in both blends but to different degrees. Both polymers decreased in orientation with increasing PPO content. Annealing with fixed ends showed that the PPO chains disorient more slowly than those of PS. All binary systems were found to be amorphous and compatible.

Notes: The CO2 permeation coefficient and the difficient were measured using the permeation time-lag method for films of atactic polystyrene and high-density polyethylene, each as a function of uniaxial draw ratio. The reduction of permeability with draw ratio is observed for polystyrene and for polyethylene. In the latter it is associated with an increase in crystallinity. In both cases the premeability decreases and the solubility constant remains unchanged. The reduction of permeability is thus caused only by the reduction in diffusion of CO2 in the drawn polymers. The mechainism is different for the two polymers, as is confirmed by measurements of birefringence, glass transition temperature, and crystallinity.
