    Notes: Summary Cadmium is present naturally in the air mainly as a result of volcanic emissions and release by vegetation. Anthropogenic sources, which overall give rise to emissions one order of magnitude greater than natural sources, are largely primary non-ferrous metals production and waste incineration. Measured concentrations of airborne cadmium are typically 〈 1 ng m−3 at remote sites, 0.1–10 ng m−3 at rural sites and 1–100 ng m−3 at urban and industrial sites, dependent upon the nature and proximity of local sources. Particle sizes are generally 〈2 μm, and often considerably smaller, consistent with an anthropogenic source and a long atmospheric life-time. Cadmium deposition to the land occurs with fluxes varying from 0.05 ng cm−2 month−1 in Greenland to circa 1000 ng cm−2 month−1 in the vicinity of major industrial sources. The possible significance of a motor vehicular source of airborne cadmium is also reviewed.

    Notes: Protein deficiency is a major nutritional problem in Nigeria. Low Per capita income, adverse environment, and livestock diseases make it difficult to obtain sufficient quantities of high quality protein. Several selected food items common to Southern Nigeria were analyzed for essential ammo acids content. When these food items were grouped into a typical meal pattern for 1 wk, methionine was inadequate in breakfast; however, it was found that the average essential ammo acid intakes per day were adequate. With proper meal combinations and supplementations, it would be possible to improve dietary intakes of essential amino acids in Nigeria by utilizing common foods available and acceptable to the population.

    Notes: SUMMARY. The drift of chironomid egg masses was investigated in the River Mole (Devon) and the River Wye (Powys) in 1981. Large numbers of egg masses were found in the drift just after dusk; on one occasion an estimated 50,000 egg masses passed a sampling point in 5 h. Oviposition of free-floating egg masses appeared to be initiated and synchronized by the onset of darkness. Egg masses of some Pentaneurini (Tanypodinae), Tanytarsini and Chironomini (Chironominae) were found in the drift and adhering to submerged stones.Flotation by means of a gas vacuole within the egg mass was observed in the Polypedilum ‘convictum’ group. The gas vacuole decreased in size over 8–11 h and the egg masses sank after 2–3h.Some chironomid egg masses are capable of drifting large distances after oviposition. The implications of sueh drift are briefly discussed in relation to the distribution of chironomid larvae.

The gonadotrophin responses to single and repeated injections of a long-acting synthetic analogue of luteinizing hormone releasing factor (LRF), d-Ser(TBU)6EA10LHRH, were investigated in 10 women with normoprolactinaemic hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. Abnormal luteinizing hormone (LH) responses were observed in two of the five patients treated with 5μg of the analogue and in all five patients treated with three injections of 10, 20 and 10 uμg administered at intervals of 10-14 h. However, the LH response to repeated injections of the analogue was of similar magnitude and duration to that observed in normal women in response to an oestrogen provocation test in the early-to-mid follicular phase of the cycle. Thus failure of the LH response to oestrogen provocation in women with hypogonadotrophism results from hypothalamic rather than primary pituitary dysfunction. This study confirms the usefulness of this analogue of LRF in the assessment of pituitary secretory function in women with abnormal responses to oestrogen positive feedback.

It is nothing of the sort’.Cornford understands this as the suggestion that the memory and the original perception are of different things: ‘ All that the objection in fact established was that “ perception” must be stretched to include awareness of memory images’.
