Notes: Abstract An improved synthesis of the lipophile 18F-fluoropropane, yielding 30–45 mCi 18F-labelled radiopharmaceutical, is described. The radiochemical yield was 55%–66% determined at the end of a 1-h synthesis. Radiochemical and chemical purity of 18F-fluoropropane was 99% as determined by gas chromatography. Low-temperature autoradiography was used to investigate the lipophile 18F-n-fluoropropane as a myelin tracer for use with positron emission tomography. The white to grey matter ratio based on autoradiograms 12 min after administration of the radiotracer was 2:1, the highest reported to date.

Notes: [Auszug] Figure 1 shows the open-circuit dissolution of the oxalic acid film in 1M sulphuric acid. The electron micrographs show that the pore widening occurs uniformly throughout the film5. Thus, it seems possible to determine the distribution of incorporated impurities across the pore walls by varying the ...

Notes: [Auszug] The structure of the rotor is shown schematically in Fig. 1; it has an axis of rotation on which rests a float and three transverse bars to which blades (or vanes) are attached with wax. The axis and transverse bars are made of glass capillaries. The blades at each end of the transverse bars ...

Notes: Summary A case is reported of a traumatic middle meningeal arteriovenous fistula, which was formed on the contralateral side to the head injury without a skull fracture and was no longer demonstrable on the repeated angiogram after 35 days without any surgical intervention. Possible mechanisms of fistula formation and its spontaneous closure are discussed.

Notes: Summary A case of hemangioma calcificans is presented. On CT scan, the tumor shows no mass effect but is accompanied by circumscribed low density which is deemed to indicate brain atrophy and an enlarged subarachnoid space. A case of this tumor surrounded by peritumoral brain atrophy has not been reported before.

Notes: Summary A high pigment-producing strain of cultured Euphorbia millii cells was isolated by clonal selection. The pigment obtained was red and consisted mainly of anthocyanin. The amount of this pigment obtained after 24 selections was seven times that found in the original cells. Statistical and cell-pedigree analyses proved that this cell strain has stable productivity for this red pigment.

Notes: Abstract Spontaneous mutants with altered capsule synthesis were isolated from a marked strain of the symbiont,Rhizobium japonicum. Differential centrifugation was used to enrich serially for mutants incapable of forming capsules. The desired mutants were detected by altered colony morphology and altered ability to bind host plant lectin. Three mutants failed to form detectable capsules at any growth phase when cultured in vitro or in association with the host (soybean,Glycine max (L.) Merr.) roots. These mutants were all capable of nodulating and attaching to soybean roots, indicating that the presence of a capsule physically surrounding the bacterium is not required for attachment or for infection and nodulation. Nodulation by several of the mutants was linearly proportional to the amount of acidic exopolysaccharide that they released into the culture medium during the exponential growth phase, indicating that such polysaccharide synthesis is important and perhaps required for nodulation. Two of the mutants appeared to synthesize normal lectin-binding capsules when cultured in association with host roots, but not when cultured in vitro. Nodulation by these mutants appeared to depend on how rapidly after inoculation they synthesized capsular polysaccharide.

Notes: Abstract Ion-release of the rabbit vitreous body through a dialysis membrane against water was studied. To evaluate one of thermal changes in the vitreous properties, the vitreous was heated or cooled before dialysis. The average wet weight of the normal vitreous was 1.61±0.20 g and dry to wet weight ratio was 1.33±0.04%. The dry weight, sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations of the vitreous were decreased as an exponential function curve by dialysis. A decreasing ratio was prominent in the heated vitreous, the frozen vitreous and the non-thermo-treated (control) vitreous in turn. Calcium and magnesium release from the rabbit vitreous body was slow and differences among the heated, frozen and non-thermo-treated vitreous bodies were not significant, suggesting some different capture-mechanisms between the monovalent and bivalent ions.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Drei Arten von Ertrinkungsflüssigkeiten (Süßwasser, isotonische Kochsalzlösung und hypertonische Kochsalzlösung) wurden angewandt.
Notes: Summary Three kinds of drowning media, i.e., fresh water, isotonic saline, and hypertonic saline were used. After a rat was placed in a desiccator, measuring 17 cm in height and 14 cm in diameter, the vessel was filled with fluid. The average survival time of about 2.5 min did not differ significantly among the three groups. The hypertonic saline group showed the highest values in both the water content of the lung and the lung/body weight ratio; however, this group did not differ significantly from the isotonic saline group in either of the parameters. The difference between the isotonic saline group and the fresh water group was significant. There was a significant positive correlation between the two parameters. However, the lung/body weight ratio was more sensitive to the nature of the drowning media. The frequency, with which froth appeared at the nostrils of the animals that were recovered from the fluid differed significantly among the three groups. The froth appeared almost exclusively in the rats drowned in saline solution. The appearance rate seemed to depend on the salinity of the fluid. There was no significant difference in lactate concentrations among the three groups. The electrolyte (Na and Cl) concentrations in the blood of the right side of the heart reflected the composition of the drowning media.
