    Hyperphenylalaninemia due to impaired dihydrobiopterin biosynthesis (1981)

    Notes: Abstract A fourteen month-old boy with atypical phenylketonuria was treated with 5-hydroxytryptophan, L-dopa and peripheral aromatic amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor (Ro 4-4602:benserazide). Despite the good control of plasma phenylalanine on a low phenylalanine diet, he had shown no improvement in his development but progressive neurological symptoms, such asiirritability, convulsions and decrease voluntary movement. After beginning neurotransmitter therapy, his irritability disappeared promptly and the other symptoms diminished. He gradually reached his developmental milestones. At two and a half years of age, he had recovered sufficiently to be able to walk freely on treatment with 13 mg/kg/day of 5-hydroxytryptophan, 11 mg/kg/day of L-dopa and 2.7 mg/kg/day of benserazide in combination with slight restriction of phenylalanine intake (100 mg/kg/day). Levels of serotonin and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were low in the patient's CSF. His urinary biopterin (Crithidia factor) excretion was low. An increase in serum biopterin following L-phenylalanine loading was not found. Dihydropteridine reductase activity in his skin fibroblasts was normal. He excreated large amounts of erythro- and threo-neopterins (but only a trace of biopterin) in his urine. After loading with phenylalanine the urinary excretion of neopterins was even more enhanced, but biopterin remained at low levels. These findings indicated that the patient has a dihydrobiopterin synthetase deficiency.

    Notes: The precipitation behavior in the Ti–27at.%Nb–6at.%Ta–6at.%Zr alloy aged at 643 K was examined by means of time-of-flight neutron small-angle scattering. When the alloy was aged, fine-scale α precipitates appeared. During the precipitation process, each precipitate grew in size, but the total number of precipitates remained nearly constant up to 1 Ms of ageing. The increase of critical superconducting current density could be connected with increasing size of α precipitates. The specimen for the measurements consisted of a composite containing 3721 filaments in a copper matrix. The use of neutrons was shown to give great advantages for the investigation of precipitation phenomena.

    Notes: Abstract Binocular visual function after surgery for detached retina was examined in 100 patients with a visual acuity of less than 0.3 in the reattached retina and with a visual acuity of more than 1.0 in the non-detached retina: 1) There was no significant sex difference in binocular visual function. 2) There was no significant difference in binocular visual function according to postoperative interval. 3) Maintenance of postoperative binocular visual function was best in patients under 19 years of age, and grew worse with age. 4) In patients with a visual acuity of more than 0.1 in the reattached retina, simultaneous perception was good in 100%, and fusion in more than 80%. However, stereopsis was worse in most cases. 5) In patients with a visual acuity of less than 0.1 in the reattached retina, all aspects of binocular visual function were worse, except in those under 19 years of age. 6) There was no significant difference in binocular visual function between patients with and without temporary amputation of extrinsic ocular muscles at operation. 7) There was no significant difference in binocular visual function between patients with and without macular detachment before operation. 8) In the patients who had had an encircling operation, binocular visual function was worse than in those operated on with other procedures, because the former had the severest retinal detachment.

    Notes: Summary Application of conventional histochemical techniques to the living chick retina demonstrates that phosphorylase can synthesize glycogen (polyglucose) in vivo, in the paraboloid of the accessory cone.     Notes: Summary The immunoglobulin class of rheumatoid factor (RF) in sera and synovial fluids of patients with rheumatic diseases was measured by a solid-phase enzyme immunoassay. IgG-RF was frequently found in seronegative sera as well as in seropositive sera of rheumatic patients. Titers of IgG-RF were higher in the active phase than in the inactive phase of SLE and showed a correlation to the levels of hypocomplementemia and circulating immune complexes in SLE sera. Titers of IgA-RF were likewise higher in the active-phase of SLE with a correlation to titers of circulating immune complexes. IgA-RF was also found frequently in sera of patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Myocard von 8 Todesfällen durch Elektrizität wurde mittels der indirekten Immunoperoxidase-Methode auf seinen Myoglobingehalt untersucht. In 7 Fällen wurden deutliche Myoglobinaustritte aus den Muskelfasern nachgewiesen. Nach postmortaler Einwirkung von Elektrizität auf Myocard und Skelettmuskulatur von 9 Fällen mit natürlicher Todesursache wurden mit gleicher Untersuchungstechnik ebenfalls starke Myoglobinverluste demonstriert. Die Befunde werden in erster Linie auf Ischämien bzw. thermische Effekte, die durch die elektrische Energie verursacht wurden, zurückgeführt. Da die Myoglobindarstellung eine wesentlich bessere Beurteilung geschädigter Herzmuskelabschnitte zuläßt als die HE-Färbung, kann sie bei der forensischen Untersuchung des Todes durch Elektrizität von Vorteil sein.
    Notes: Summary The myoglobin content of heart muscles was examined by the indirect immunoperoxidase method in eight autopsy cases where death was due to electricity. Seven cases showed a considerable release of myoglobin from the myocardial fibers. In experimental comparison, the heart muscles and skeletal muscles from nine cases where death was natural were exposed to electricity, and considerable deletion of myoglobin was also demonstrated. We believe that the findings of ischemia or thermal effects due to electricity were the cause of the release of myoglobin. Because the demonstration of myoglobin is preferable to estimation of the damaged areas of muscles by hematoxylin-eosin staining, this examination may be more advantageous in forensic examination of death by electricity.
