    Notes: Abstract In this brief note, we have (a) introduced a very general form of plasticity definition; (b) indicated several types of models used for monotonic and transient loading of soil-like materials, which do not depend on time effects. The details of each form are given elsewhere but we believe that the new framework provides an easier and more general interpretation of a variety of behaviour form.

    Notes: Abstract This paper treats the soil and rock or concrete as a two-phase medium composed of a solid skeleton and an interstitial fluid. Under the unsaturated condition of interstitial fluid, the third phase is taken into consideration. In this paper, we consider the constitutive relation, dynamic and kinematic relations, and also various approximations with their limits of validity, including those of most practical engineering situations such as the consolidation problem and the undrained behaviour. The finite element discretization and the time dependent solution of various classes of soil problem are also discussed.

    Notes: This paper presents new finite element formulations of the shallow-water wave equations which use different basis functions for the velocity and height fields. These arrangements are analysed with the Fourier transform technique which was developed by Schoenstadt,1 and they are also compared with other finite difference and finite element schemes. The new schemes are integrated in time for two initial states and compared with analytic solutions and numerical solutions from other schemes. The behaviour of the new forms is excellent and they are also convenient to apply in two dimensions with triangular elements.

    Notes: The difficulties experienced in the treatment of hyperbolic systems of equations by the finite element method (or other) spatial discretization procedures are well known. In this paper a temporal discretization precedes the spatial one which in principle is considered along the characteristics to achieve a self adjoint form. By a suitable expansion, the original co-ordinates are preserved and combined with the use of a standard Galerkin process to achieve an accurate discretization. It is shown that the process is equivalent to the Taylor-Galerkin methods of Donea.17Several examples illustrate the accuracy and efficiency attainable in such problems as transport, shallow water equations, transonic flow etc.

    Notes: The use of the finite element concept in the time domain has resulted in a reinterpretation of many previously recorded recurrence formulae and the discovery of new ones. An important new feature common to all such schemes is the fact that a weighted forcing term is used. This precludes the application of unrealistic forcing terms resulting in a direct finite difference derivation and ‘smooths’ oscillation due to sudden changes of boundary condition. This problem is discussed in the context of various two- and three-level time schemes.

    Notes: This paper discusses the Bossak-Newmark algorithm, which is an extension of the well-known Newmark algorithm1 for the numerical integration of the equations of discretized structural dynamics problems. The extra parameter introduced here enables the method (when used on the test equation ẍ = -ω2x) to be simultaneously second order, unconditionally stable and with positive artificial damping.Comparisons are made with another modification of Newmark introduced by Hilber, Hughes and Taylor2.

    Notes: A new, improved infinite element based on mapping is proposed for modelling unbounded domain problems. Mapping has previously been used in such problems, not only for the entire domain, but also for the infinite element itself. The novelty of the present approach is the simplicity of the mapping, and the retention of standard integration abscissae and weights. The implementation of these elements is very straightforward, and they are ideally suited for the analysis of infinite domain static problems in two and three dimensions.
