Notes: Intravenous salbutamol, a β-adrenoceptor stimulant, given to nine patients in normal labour, with continuous monitoring of uterine activity and of the maternal and fetal cardiovascular systems, was shown to decrease uterine activity significantly; maternal and fetal heart rates were significantly increased, and maternal systolic and diastolic arterial pressures were significantly decreased during the infusion, although no treatment had to be discontinued because of these effects. Apart from worsening of low back pain during the infusion in one patient, subjective sideeffects were trivial. With the salbutamol infusion continued at an effective maintenance rate, the cardioselective β-adrenoceptor blocking drug, practolol, given intravenously, reduced the maternal heart rate (although not significantly) but it did not alter the fetal heart rate; it also appeared to interfere transiently with the inhibiting action of salbutamol on uterine activity, but cervical dilatation was arrested until the salbutamol infusion was discontinued. At least in five patients, labour remained suppressed until oxytocin was infused intravenously.

Notes: During May at Woods Hole, female Gasterosteus aculeatus periodically produce clutches of 112±19 eggs with an average diameter of 1·31±0·05 mm. The fish generally have primordial follicles ranging up to 0·56 mm diameter and a clutch of larger follicles undergoing synchronous growth. The size of oocytes within a growing clutch appears to be random within a population, which indicates that recruitment of clutches is not induced by a local environmental event. The largest oocytes within the population of primordial follicles have just begun vitellogenesis but are temporarily arrested. All oocytes within follicles larger than 1·1 mm diameter undergo spontaneous maturation and enlarge to preovulatory size when incubated at 16° C in a simple saline medium. Added deoxycorticosterone can induce similar events in somewhat smaller follicles placed in culture. Thus, in vivo, follicles grow from 0·56 to 1·1 mm diameter by vitellogenesis, and further enlargement is achieved by hydration during steroid-induced maturation. Females carrying follicles in maturational stages also have a new clutch of follicles entering vitellogenic growth from the population of primordial follicles. Injection of human chlorionic gonado-tropin causes a recruitment of follicles into vitellogenesis regardless of the stage of follicles within the growing clutch. One interpretation of these results is that when vitellogenic follicles reach a diameter of 1·1 mm a surge of gonadotropin(s) induces the follicle cells to release steroid, which results in oocyte maturation; the same surge also recruits a new clutch of vitellogenic oocytes. Qualitatively similar results were obtained for Apeltes quadracus; thus the recruitment phenomenon observed for G. aculeatus may be a general feature among sticklebacks.

Notes: Summary A study presenting findings of focal hippocampal x-irradiation in early infancy and late behavior at two ages was carried out using Long-Evans hooded rats (Rattus norvegicus). Animals from eleven litters received 150-R irradiation treatments for 5 or 15 consecutive days and were then tested in an open field situation and in a two-way active avoidance apparatus. The results indicated that the behavioral deficits paralleled those seen in animals with classical hippocampal lesions. The results were offered in support of a response suppression model for hippocampal functioning.

Notes: Abstract Xenoliths up to a metre in length occur in a carbonatitic diatreme member of a lamprophyric dike swarm at Moeraki River, south Westland, New Zealand. The xenoliths reported here consist of Iherzolite (chromite, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and olivine) and harzburgite (chromite, olivine and orthopyroxene). A clinopyroxene xenocryst is also reported. Analyses of these phases are presented. The chemistry, low CaO and high Al2O3 and Na2O content of the clinopyroxenes; low CaO and high forsterite content of the olivine, suggests that these phases were in equilibrium under high pressures within the spinel Iherzolite field. An orthopyroxene-chromite intergrowth is described and is interpreted as the product of the re-equilibration of garnet in passing from the garnet Iherzolite field to the spinel Iherzolite field.

Notes: Summary Ceforanide (BL-S 786) is a new long-acting parenteral cephalosporin which has the major pharmacologic advantage of requiring only twice a day dosage. We treated 28 adult patients with community-acquired bacterial pneumonia using doses of 500 or 1000 mg every 12 hours. Twenty-four of 28 infections were due toStreptococcus pneumoniae and/orHemophilus influenzae, and all pathogens were susceptible in vitro to both cephalothin and ceforanide. Patients were treated for a mean of 7.5 days, and all showed a good clinical and radiographic response with no mortality. Of the 13 patients withH. influenzae, the organism could still be recovered during therapy in 9/12 and post therapy in 3/8. One clinical superinfection (sepsis due toPseudomonas aeruginosa) occurred during therapy. Side effects with therapy included thrombocytosis (15), asymptomatic eosinophilia (5), and mild elevation of the serum transaminases (3). These studies suggest that ceforanide is a safe and effective agent for the treatment of adult patients with bacterial pneumonia due toS. pneumoniae; further experience in therapy ofH. influenzae is needed because of frequent failure of ceforanide to eradicate this organism from the sputum.
