Notes: Summary Although heat-treated steels are used less frequently than controlled-rolled steels at present for line pipes, future needs for heavier-wall, larger-diameter line pipes will increase the importance of quenched-and-tempered steels for pipe materials. In addition to conventional quenching and tempering, new heat-treatment procedures such as direct quenching and intercritical heat treatment are being investigated. For line pipe accessories such as flanges, fittings and valves, heat treatment is necessitated by the heavier section size and/or because these parts are formed at high temperatures. The Mn-Mo-Nb steel developed by Climax Molybdenum Company has good mechanical properties after quench-and-tempering heat treatment. The IN-787 steel and Ni-Cr-Mo steels are also reported to be used as heat-treated grades. The 1220-mm-diameter and 25-mm-wall thickness pipes with an 85% DWTT transition temperature of -60°C have been test produced with heat-treated steels containing Ni and Mo.
