Notizen: Aims:  To examine whether or not the tight junction-associated transmembrane protein occludin is expressed in rosette or gland-like structures in human rectal carcinoid tumours. The tight junction is crucial for the formation and maintenance of organized tubular structures in glandular epithelia. Previous studies have reported the presence of glandular structures in carcinoid tumours, though they are not believed to arise from glandular epithelium. Methods and results:  The expression profiles of occludin in 40 carcinoid tumours were examined immunohistochemically, using an anti-occludin monoclonal antibody. In eight (20%) samples of typical carcinoid tumours, a small number of rosette-like tubular structures outlined by occludin were detected. Conclusions:  Tight junction-associated molecules, including occludin, are thought to be one of the most characteristic structural markers of polarized glandular structures. The results of the present study provide supportive evidence that carcinoid tumour cells are capable of glandular differentiation.

Notizen: Summary The cholinergic agonists, pilocarpine, physostigmine and nicotine, inhibited the prolactin release induced by morphine in male rats in vivo. Pilocarpine also inhibited the release of prolactin induced by β-endorphin or metoclopramide without affecting the basal and haloperidol-stimulated serum prolactin levels. The inhibitory effect of pilocarpine on the morphine-stimulated release of prolactin was antagonized by concurrent administration of atropine but not by atropine methylnitrate or by mecamylamine, while the inhibition by nicotine was antagonized by mecanylamine but not by atropine. The stimulation of prolactin release by morphine and its reversal by pilocarpine were observed after the administration of haloperidol or α-methyltyrosine. These results suggest that the central cholinergic system exerts an inhibitory influence on the prolactin release induced by morphine or β-endorphin and the cholinergic inhibition is not mediated via catecholaminergic neurons.

Notizen: Abstract We report a case of giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN) at risk of developing neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) with age-related changes observable on MRI of the brain. However, although the usefulness of MR imaging in NCM is well known, age-related changes on MRI have rarely been reported. The prevalence of positive MRI findings and prognosis in GCMN accompanied by epilepsy and/or mental retardation awaits clarification. This case report may suggest the importance of serial brain MRI in cases of GCMN in assessing the risk of NCM.
