Notes: Summary The incidence of diabetes among people aged 18–50 years has been studied prospectively in nine towns, chosen to encompass the range of socioeconomic conditions and spread of latitude in England and Wales. The incidence of Type 1 (insulindependent) diabetes in this age group varied little between the towns. However, the incidence of Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes was markedly higher in the towns with ‘worse’ socio-economic conditions. The mean incidences were 23 per 100000 for the three ‘worse’ towns and 10 per 100000 for the three ‘better’ towns. This was not explicable by an association between the disease and social class. This finding has to be reconciled with known and hypothesised influences in the aetiology of Type 2 diabetes.

Notes: Twenty-three cases of glomus tumours seen at the Dermatology out-patients of two hospitals are reported. Their principal clinical and histopathological features are recorded and the recent literature reviewed. The findings are compared with previously published accounts.

Notes: The effectiveness of a 1 % chlorhexidine-containing dental gel on dental plaque and gingival health was evaluated over a period of 6 months using a double-blind procedure. One hundred and seventeen mentally retarded subjects aged between 10–17 years resident in an institution were divided into two groups. One group was assigned daily brushing with the 1 % chlorhexidine gel, the other group a placebo quinine sulfate-containing gel. No other form of oral hygiene was used during the experimental period. Assessment of dental plaque accumulation and gingivitis was made at 0, 1, 3, and 6 months. An assessment was also made 2 months after the gel was withdrawn from use and normal toothbrushing procedures resumed. No clinical or statistical advantage was noted in plaque or gingivitis scores in the group receiving chlorhexidine treatment during the 6-month period. This group showed a higher prevalence of tooth staining. It was concluded that periodontal severity and poor oral hygiene exceeded the plaque- and gingivitis-preventing potential of chlorhexidine.

Notes: Abstract The newly derived dynamic-crack-branching criterion with its modifications is verified by the dynamicphotoelastic results of dynamic crack branchings in thinpolycarbonate, single-edged crack-tension specimens. Successful crack branching was observed in four specimens and unsuccessful branching in another. Crack branching consistently occurred when the necessary conditions ofK I =K I b =3.3 MPa $$\sqrt m$$ and the sufficiency condition ofr o =r c =0.75 mm were satisfied simultaneously. In the unsuccessful branching test, the necessary condition was not satisfied sinceK I was always less thanK I b .

Notes: Abstract Two new techniques making use of the scattered-light speckle pattern have been developed which yield the displacements on an arbitrary interior plane of a 3-D body. When a sheet of coherent light passes through a transparent 3-D body, a small fraction is scattered. This scattered light produces a speckle pattern in an imaging system. By recording two superimposed images of this speckle pattern, one before and one after body deformation, the displacements on the interior illuminated plane can be found. The technique of scattered-light photography uses a single illuminating beam and is sensitive to displacements greater than one speckle diameter, approximately 3 μm. Scattered-light speckle interferometry uses two illuminating beams and is sensitive to displacements greater than one half the wavelength of light being used, approximately 0.2 μm. With both techniques, the double-exposed speckle photograph is optically processed to yield displacement information. With both techniques, the maximum displacement measurable is limited by correlation requirements between the two speckle patterns. Experimental results are presented demonstrating the two new techniques.

Notes: Abstract The variation in Mode I stress-intensity factor throughout the thickness of an ASTM standard compact tension specimen was determined using scattered-light speckle interferometry. Two very thin sheets of coincident coherent light traveling in opposite directions were passed through a Plexiglas specimen normal to the crack faces. A double-exposed photograph of the scattered-light speckle pattern was taken while the specimen was subjected to a small load increment. From this double-exposed photograph, the change in the crack-opening displacement could be determined. From the information about the crack-opening displacement in the region of the crack tip, the stress-intensity factor was calculated for various interior planes and on the surface of the specimen. For the compact tension specimen tested, the stress-intensity factor did not vary throughout the specimen's thickness. The method of scattered-light speckle interferometry proved to be very powerful in solving this complex three-dimensional problem.
