Notes: Protein concentrations in milk were compared using a modified Lowry and the micro-Kjeldahl methods. Correlation coefficients for absorbance (Lowry) vs protein (Kjeldahl) were 0.925, 0.904 and 0.899 for individual Holstein, individual Guernsey and bulk raw milk samples, respectively, whereas, the R2 was 0.9998 for samples of 2.5-4.0% protein prepared from three brands of nonfat dry milk. Added lactose, up to 16 mg/ml milk, did not interfere in the test. Storage at 4°C for up to 6 days was without effect. However, whey proteins had a lower specific absorbance than did casein. The standard deviation of differences among triplicate Lowry tests was about one-third of that for duplicate micro-Kjeldahl tests.

Notes: Abstract— Synaptosomes were prepared from rat brain on a continuous gradient of sodium diatrizoate and compared with synaptosomes obtained on a discontinuous sucrose gradient. The yield of synaptosomal protein using diatrizoate was double that obtained with sucrose. No significant differences in quality between the two preparations were found based on measurement of: β-glucuronidase, RNA polymerase, 2′,3′-cyclic nucleotide 3′-phosphohydrolase, total and Na+, K+ -ATPase, acetylcholinesterase, lactic acid dehydrogenase, glucose utilization, and serotonin uptake. Electron microscopy showed the vesicles in the diatrizoate synaptosomes to be better preserved. Vesicles prepared on diatrizoate segregated into two distinct bands which differed in electron microscopic appearance and enzyme activity. The less dense vesicles were smaller, had much higher Mg2+ -ATPase activity, and a lower content of acetylcholinesterase than the more dense vesicles. The less dense vesicle preparation was very homogeneous morphologically, free of myelin and mitochondria, and contained occasional organelle fragments and double membrane structures.

Notes: Abstract The effects of uncertainties and errors in various constraints used in the analysis of multi-component life-time spectra of positrons annihilating in metals containing defects have been investigated in detail using computer simulated decay spectra and subsequent analysis. It is found that the errors in the fitted values of the main components lifetimes and intensities introduced from incorrect values of the instrumental resolution function and of the source-surface components can easily exceed the statistical uncertainties. The effect of an incorrect resolution function may be reduced by excluding the peak regions of the spectra from the analysis. The influence of using incorrect source-surface components in the analysis may on the other hand be reduced by including the peak regions of the spectra. A main conclusion of the work is that extreme caution should be exercised to avoid introducing large errors through the constraints used in the analysis of experimental lifetime data.

Notes: Abstract The equations of state for the ideal classical gas are generalized with two characteristic constants known as the state indices. A simple and complete representation is developed for the super-ideal gas, with explicit results which are general enough to cover a wide range of equilibrium systems and states. Evidence and justification are provided in terms of examples and results of statistical physics. The new model should prove useful for treating problems involving physical behavior and properties which might otherwise call for specialized or advanced methods of statistical mechanics.

Notes: This study enables the extension of a recent design procedure for perforated plate extraction columns to include operation under jetting conditions. Correlations of experimental data are given for jet length, jet contraction, drop size, and mass transfer rates in continuous phase controlled liquid-liquid systems. Systems exhibiting very low mass transfer rates were used, and this gave significantly different results from those obtained earlier with moderate rates of mass transfer.

Notes: A recent design procedure for perforated plate extraction columns requires extension to include jetting conditions at each perforation. For this purpose, correlations are obtained for jet length, jet contraction, drop size, and mass transfer coefficients in disperse phase controlled liquid-liquid systems. Experimental variables include nozzle size, flow velocity, and physical properties.

Notes: Infrared absorbance measurements as a function of temperature down to 13°K have been made on poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polystyrene. Transition temperatures are assigned to the temperatures where there are abrupt changes in the absorbance or integrated band intensities. Bands of known structural origin arising from either crystal-line or amorphous phases are studied to probe the structure basis and environment effect for each transition. Transitions are found around 50, 120, 180, and 220°K for PET and around 50° and 235°K for polystyrene.
