Notes: Prior studies and commonsense definitions of the decision-making process suggest that the ascriptive power of the commitment offense, gravity of the commitment offense, psychiatric characteristics of the offender, and the social identity given off by the offender's family would be causally related to variance in the deviance label, i.e., decisions to commit to a mental hospital rather than to a corrections institution. Case records from both settings were analyzed for traces of the decision. However, controlling for each of the alternative variables fails to eliminate the strong relationship between intensity of the offender's prior career of delinquent behavior and the formal deviance label qua type of commitment. The multivariate path model suggests that delinquency intensity and type of commitment are the two most important determinants of mental classification.

Notes: 1. The effects on the coronary and systemic haemodynamics of intravenous and intracoronary injections of two benzfuran derivatives, amiodarone and its brominated analogue (L8040), were studied in open-chest anaesthetized dogs. The effects of L8040 on cardiac intracellular potentials after 6 weeks of 20 mg/kg intraperitoneal injections in rabbits were also investigated.2. Both compounds produced dose-related and quantitatively similar decreases in coronary vascular resistance following their intracoronary administration; threshold effects occurred with about 0.25 mg of each drug and maximal effects with 4 mg. Larger intracoronary doses produced measurable systemic effects.3. Intravenous injections of amiodarone and L8040 (2·5·10 mg/kg) produced dose-related decreases in heart rate and aortic pressure with a fall in total peripheral resistance. The left ventricular output was either unaffected or increased with a consistent augmentation in stroke volume.4. The bradycardia produced by both drugs was associated with prolongation of the P–R interval of the electrocardiogram with no significant effect on the QRS duration or the Q–T interval.5. Each drug produced a decrease in the total peripheral vascular resistance with no change in left ventricular end diastolic pressure except after 10 mg/kg doses which led to an increase in this parameter.6. Cardiac contractile force and peak LV dp/dt were reduced by both drugs in a dose-related manner.7. Chronic intraperitoneal administration of L8040 in rabbits caused a prolongation of the duration of the atrial and ventricular intracellular potential without an effect on the maximal rate of depolarization.8. The effects of amiodarone or L8040 on the coronary circulation and arterial pressure may be attributed to their vasodilator properties but their depressant actions on cardiac contractile force and peak LV dp/dt with an increase in left ventricular end diastolic pressure at high doses, also suggest intrinsic negative inotropic propensity for both compounds.9. It is concluded that the overall effects on coronary and systemic haemodynamics of amiodarone and its brominated analogue are likely to permit a favourable influence on the balance of oxygen supply and demand in myocardial ischaemia; in addition, their actions on sinoatrial and atrio-ventricular conduction as well as those on cardiac repolarization suggest potential antiarrhythmic properties which merit investigation.

Notes: 1. Plasma levels of propranolol were measured fluorometrically in patients with angina pectoris and in patients admitted to the Coronary Care Unit with acute myocardial infarction.2. In thirty patients with stable angina pectoris, plasma propranolol levels varied almost linearly with doses between 10 and 120 mg during 6-hourly chronic oral administration. Plasma levels greater than 100 ng/ml produced 70–80% reduction in the tachycardia induced by strenous exercise on a treadmill.3. In nineteen patients with acute myocardial infarction given oral propranolol, 20 mg 6-hourly, peak as well as trough plasma levels of the drug increased progressively but remained below 100 ng/ml in all except two patients during the first 24 h after their admission to the Coronary Care Unit.4. The data suggest that the use of low and fixed doses of propranolol may not produce adequate plasma levels or significant β-adrenoceptor blockade in the early stages of acute myocardial infarction in man.

Notes: Studies of communication and change in underdeveloped countries were drawn upon to design a study of what kinds of persons adopted—or refused to adopt—what kinds of practices in the “War on Poverty” in an Appalachian county. The study approaches the individual as an interactive behavioral system whose components are variables defining his “style of life.” Data were gathered on 41 aspects of life style of heads of households and homemakers in two rural Appalachian neighborhoods. Correlation, factor analysis, and weighted rotation of these data matrices produced three individual “types,” as indicated by the items which distinguished among them.

Notes: Phytic acid and nine elements (potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, and copper) were determined in 12 commercially available cultivars of hexaploid triticales, one octaploid triticale, one wheat and one rye. The amount of phytate phosphorus varied from 1.4–5.3 mg/g in the whole grain, from 0.5–1.9 mg/g in flours and from 0.6–2.2 mg/g in bran of triticales. There were significant variations in the amount of calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc but not in potassium, magnesium, sodium, manganese or copper due to cultivars. The location had more pronounced effect on micro-elements (manganese, iron, copper and zinc) than on the macro-elements (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium and sodium). The predominant minerals of triticales were phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Phytic acid does not seem to have an apparent correlation with either iron or phosphorus in triticales.

Notes: Abstract The rates of release of salivary amylase and esterase from normal and polyoma virus infected mouse submandibular glands were measured in a continuous flow perifusion system. Following stimulation by epinephrine, the rate of release of esterase by the infected glands was significantly greater than that from control glands. The rate of amylase release, while greater from infected glands, was not significantly different. The total enzyme contents from infected and control tissues were similar. Cyclic GMP was found to be higher in the infected glands than the control glands, suggesting one possible mechanism for the higher rates of enzyme release by infected tissues.

Notes: Bulgur of acceptable quality was prepared from two commercially available cultivars of triticale by boiling 10 min and cooking for 3 min or 10 min at 15 psi and 120°C. Moisture contents of 32-41% were needed to achieve a desirable level of gelatinization of starch. Compared to triticale whole meal, bulgur had almost similar amounts of protein, amino acids and gross energy but lower amounts of crude fat, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin E, calcium, iron, copper, phosphorus, manganese, zinc, potassium, sodium and magnesium.
