Description / Table of Contents:
Summary An apparatus to measure Young's modulus of rodlike samples by means of longitudinal resonant vibrations is described. The resonant frequencies at room temperature are about 10 kHz for hard elastic polymers and about 1 kHz for rubbers. Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio have been determined of two vulcanized rubbers, of polymethylmethacrylate and polycarbonate in the glassy state, and of partially crystallized high density polyethylene and paraffine. Young's modulus can be measured to an accuracy of about 0.3%. Accomplishment of boundary conditions of the vibration and the influence of additional loads attached to the ends of the bar to allow electromagnetic transmission of vibrations are discussed. By means of the frequency dispersion of Young's modulus the Poisson's ratio can be assessed and inhomogeneities of samples can be detected. The ranges of applicability of the extended theory of longitudinal vibrations and its approximations are specified.
