    Notes: A single-filament pull-out test was used to study adhesion of Kevlar-49 fibers to thermoplastic polymers. The test involved pulling a partially embedded fiber out of a polymer film. Kevlar-49 fibers with three different surface treatments were used with five thermoplastic materials. The test resulted in the measurement of two properties, an interfacial bond strength and a frictional shear strength. The interfacial bond strength is an essential factor in determining the critical aspect ratio of discontinuous fibers in a composite. The frictional shear strength was found to correlate with the tensile strength of discontinuous fiber composites which fail by fiber pull-out. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the fiber pull-out specimens after testing. Observations of the fiber showed that the failure mode at the fiber-matrix interface was complex. The predominant failure mode was fracture at the interface (or in some weak boundary layer). In some cases, cohesive failure of the fiber surface was observed, with the result that strips of material were torn from the fiber surface.

    Notes: The mechanical properties are presented for a series of discontinuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites made with random-in-plane fiber orientation. The matrix and fiber materials were chosen to provide a wide range of strength, modulus, ductility and adhesive properties. In many cases strong, rigid, yet tough composites were fabricated. Strength levels of over 20,000 psi and modulus values over 1,000,000 psi were reached in several systems reinforced with short Kevlar-49 and graphite fibers. A strong dependence of composite strength and modulus on fiber strength and modulus was noted indicating good transfer of load from matrix to reinforcement. Fiber efficiency factors for modulus and strength were calculated for the experimental composite systems and averaged 0.19 and 0.11 respectively. Data were analyzed using basic composite theory. Properties of the experimental composites could not be predicted from constituent properties.

    Notes: The diffusivities of simple gases through a series of polyurethane block copolymers of differing aromatic urethane content and type of soft segment were measured using a quadrapole mass spectrometer as a detecting device. Although an Arrhenius expression generally described the temperature dependence of diffusion in this system, a discontinuity was observed in the Arrhenius plots for some materials, and the discontinuity was found to be related to the onset of the glass transition in the hard domains. Increasing the hard segment content of the materials decreased the diffusivity due to the increase in the activation energy of diffusion. Increasing the soft segment length brought about a decrease in the activation energy with an increase in diffusivity. Polyster urethanes had lower activation energies for diffusion than polyether urethanes of similar hard segment composition. Finally, as the penetrant diameter was increased, a decrease in the diffusivity and an increase in the activation energy was noted.

    Notes: The compatibility, morphology, and mechanical properties of poly-∊-caprolactone (PCL) blended with poly(vinyl chloride), nitrocellulose, and cellulose acetate butyrate are described in this study. Methods used in this investigation included differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical testing, small-angle light scattering, light microscopy and stress-strain testing. Blends of PCL with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) are shown to be compatible in all proportions. In the PCL concentration range 40-100%, the PCL crystallizes in the form of negative spherulites. The spherulites were found to be volume filling with as much as 35% PVC. The nitrocellulose blends with PCL exhibited the glass transition behavior of a compatible system over the composition range of 50-100% PCL. At lower PCL concentrations, phase separation was apparent. The PCL crystallinity was present only in the nitrocellulose blends with more than 50% PCL, and it was in the form of rod-like super-structures. Blends of PCL with cellulose acetate butyrate were shown to be phase separated, with one phase having nearly equal proportions of the two polymers. The PCL crystallinity was in the form of negative spherulites and was formed with PCL compositions as low as 50%. Stress-strain results show polycaprolactone to be an effective plasticizer for poly(vinyl chloride) and the cellulose derivatives studied.

    Notes: The adsorption of albumin, γ-globulin, and fibrinogen was measured on three ex vivo polymeric shunt surfaces [polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Silastic, and segmented polyether urethane (Biomer)] exposed to flowing heparinized, canine blood in vivo. Small amounts of radiolabeled proteins were infused into anesthetized mongrel dogs and the deposition of radioactivity on the walls of femoral arteriovenous shunts was followed with time for two hours following initial blood-polymer contact.Previously, transient in vivo platelet and fibrin deposition onto PVC, Silastic, and Biomer was measured by a similar technique in the absence of anticoagulant. A time-dependent phase of thrombus deposition followed by thromboembolism was observed on the PVC and Silasticshunt surfaces but not on the Biomer surface. In the studies reported here on PVC and Silastic, fibrinogen adsorption was found to predominate initially, though it subsequently desorbed somewhat and was replaced by albumin and γ-globulin. On Biomer, the adsorption of all three proteins increased with time following initial blood contact and fibrinogen was less prominent initially. The PVC surface was found to become passivated with respect to further thrombogenesis after 60-min exposure to flowing blood, at which time a higher fraction of albumin was present on the surface compared to that at earlier blood contact times. These results indicate that rearrangement of adsorbed protein species occurs with time on polymer surfaces exposed to flowing blood in vivo. Early and predominant fibrinogen adsorption appears to be an important factor in the thrombogenic and embolic events observed on the PVC and Silastic shunt surfaces in vivo.
