Notes: Abstract Chloromethyl phthalimide, oxymethyl phthalimide, and phthalimide are absorbed by the albino rat at a comparatively high rate. Only phthalimide, the metabolic product, will be recordable from fetuses, following oral administration of chloromethyl phthalimide and oxymethyl phthalimide to pregnant rats. Those findings, in conjunction with metabolic studies applied to fetuses isolated by caesarian section, appear to suggest the occurrence of an intensive metabolism in fetal tissue. Certain differences established between results of thin-layer chromatography, on the one hand, and 15N studies, on the other, are likely to support the assumption that phthalimide is further metabolised by splitting the imide ring yielding phthalamic acid.

Notes: Abstract The organophosphate insecticide imidan includes a phthalimide group. Because of the structural relationship to the teratogenic compound thalidomide we have investigated its placental transfer and metabolic fate in rats. Its passage to embryonic tissues could be confirmed. After intraamniotic injection to the first amniotic cavity of the left uteri we could establish a distribution of imidan and 32P compounds throughout the uteri, the concentration depending upon the incubation time and the distances from the place of injection. The half-life of imidan, detected in the exteriorized fetuses or in newborns, was 50–70 min. Imidoxon, i.e., the oxidized form of imidan, has a diminished half-life. This fact explicates the presence of imidoxon only in small concentrations after application of imidan.

Notes: Abstract Multiple quantum nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) transitions were observed on polarized8Li nuclei, which were produced by capture of polarized neutrons in a single crystal of LiTaO3. The asymmetric8Liβ-radiation distribution was used for the detection of NMR. A quadrupole moment ratio ¦Q(8Li)/Q(7Li)¦=0.78(1) was determined. Saturation of multiple quantum transitions in nuclear radiation detected NMR may lead to a reduction in measuring time of up to two orders of magnitude, as compared to single quantum detection methods. The measured spectra agree well with an exact lineshape calculation. The same measurements were also performed on a LiTaO3 powder sample. This was done to test a method to obtain quadrupole coupling constants from high field NMR multiple quantum powder patterns, which are easily detectable, also for higher nuclear spins. This latter method may be applicable also to conventional NMR detection techniques.

Notes: Abstract Neutron activated20F nuclei (T 1/2=11 s) in CaF2 serve for two purposes: first they produce well defined point defects by their (n, γ)-production mechanism, second, they act as probes to detect the properties of these defects in aβ- andγ-ray detected nuclear magnetic resonance experiment. Below about 70 K an interstitial defect is observed due to a quadrupolar splitting of the20F-NMR line. The defect induced electric field gradient is oriented along the 〈111〉-axis of the crystal and causes a quadrupole coupling constante 2 qQ/h=−2.0(1) MHz at the20F site. The defect anneals above 70 K with an Arrhenius like temperature dependence corresponding to an activation energyE M =0.17(4) eV.

Notes: Abstract An experimental method is presented which allows the determination of the sign of nuclear electric quadrupole interactions in solids. Activated target nuclei with a purely dipolar spin polarization are produced by capture of polarized thermal neutrons. The quadrupole coupling of the nuclei to the electric field gradient tensor in the target crystal converts this (dipolar) polarization partly into a (quadrupolar) alignment, which can be measured by the anisotropy of theγ-ray emission in a succeeding nuclear transition. The sign of the alignment created in this reorientation process depends on the sign of the electric quadrupole interaction. The reorientation effect can be enhanced by selective induction of nuclear magnetic resonance transitions. The method has been applied to measure the sign of the crystal electric field gradient (efg) in tetragonal MgF2. Further, the sign of an efg in cubic CaF2 originating from a19F interstitial adjacent to the activated20F probe nucleus has been determined. The method is in principle applicable to a considerable number of nuclides.

Notes: Abstract Thermal9Be+ (I=3/2) ions are polarized by direct optical pumping in He buffer gas. Observation of⩼gDF=± 1 transitions yields for the hyperfine splitting frequencyv hfs(9Be+, 1s 2 2s 2 S 1/2)=1250018(5) kHz. The result is discussed with regard to predictions of recent theoretical calculations and of the Fermi-Segré formula for the ground state hfs of the Li isoelectronic sequence.

Notes: Abstract Microwave transitions between the Zeeman split doublet states 22 P 1/2 and 22 P 3/2 of7Li have been measured using the optical double resonance method. The fine structure separation was determined to bev fs=10.053.184(58) MHz. The hyperfine structure was well resolved and led to considerably improved precision of the diagonal coupling constantsa 1/2=45.914(25) MHz,a 3/2=−3.055(14) MHz,b=−0.221(29) MHz. Furthermore, the contact, spin dipolar and orbital magnetic hyperfine constants are evaluated using additional results from level crossing experiments, which are more sensitive on the non-diagonal magnetic hyperfine constanta 3/2,1/2. The results are in good agreement with recent theoretical calculations. The nuclear quadrupole moment is derived fromb to beQ(7Li)=−41(6) mbarn.

Notes: Abstract The general features of hyperfine interaction measurements using neutron-activated β emitters are described and the applications of this technique are reviewed: nuclear magnetic resonance and transients of the nuclear polarization give informations on nuclear moments, interactions in undisturbed lattices, radiation induced and thermal defects in insulators and metals.
