Abstract Social change often reflects upon mineral production practices. Industry can either increase turbulence and negative public reaction, or it can increase social acceptance of the facts of a modern economy; residuals are inevitable and need management. Future social turbulence can be mitigated by residuals management, ecological and landscape planning, and long-range natural resources planning.
