Notes: [Auszug] The adhesion of rubber depends markedly on the roughness of the surface with which it is in contact4,5. Slight roughness can increase the adhesion compared with an ideally smooth surface, while larger values of roughness can greatly reduce it6. When a cylinder rolls on clean rubber, the two ...

Notes: [Auszug] Figure 1 shows data for the wear per unit distance, JET. for specimens of PTFE and low density polyethylene, LDPE, as a function of R obtained using a pin-on-disk machine (for experimental details see rf. 6). We observe that K is a marked function of R for PTFE but not for LDPE. Figure 2 shows the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 Schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement. A glass sphere of radius r is loaded against a glass plate on which is deposited a thin organic film of thickness h (typically 100 nm). The surfaces are set in relative motion with a velocity ? by the application of frictional force, F, ...

Notes: [Auszug] We measured D for two linear diffusants of the form n (CH2)NX, X being a suitable label and N = 25 or 45. The matrix was linear polyethylene cooled at two widely differing rates from the melt. The measuring technique was one we have recently developed, based on infrared microdensitometry7, and ...

Notes: [Auszug] Roberts and Thomas3 and, independently, Kendall4 had shown that in rolling friction the adhesion term may sometimes be dominant. In these circumstances the rolling friction provides a direct measure of the work required to peel apart and re-adhere the interface. This depends on the velocity, and ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have developed a simple technique for the measurement of the translational diffusion of large molecules in polymeric matrices, based on microdensitometry in the infrared. Essentially, a step function in the concentration of the diffusant is set up within the bulk matrix, and diffusion is allowed ...

Notes: The diffusion coefficient for two diffusants of the type n-(CH2)NX is measured, where N ≃ 25, 45 and X is a suitable label; the matrix is linear polyethylene cooled at two widely differing rates from the melt. The measuring technique used is a recently developed one based on infrared microdensitometry. The results indicate that these diffusants diffuse faster in the slowly cooled matrix, in marked contrast to the behavior of gaseous diffusants. They are in agreement with the predictions of the model developed in a previous paper (part I), in which the constraints imposed by interlamellar tie molecules on long diffusants were shown to be important.
